Hey guys. I have a question about the Toshiba 72" DLP. Here is a link with all the features.

One of the things I like about this tv is that it has 1080p which will come in handy with the PS3 which I will probably get, and blu-ray in the future. I want your opinion on wether this TV is worth the money, and any concerns I should consider about DLP TV's in general. I heard from a friend that DLP tvs break down easily. What are your thoughts? THanks

I personally see rainbows on DLP TVs, but that won't be a concern soon, as the color wheel is going away soon. I still probably won't buy one, I don't like the "hot centered" picture most all of the RPTVs have and have never seen one I actually really liked. I would get the extended warranty on it if you get it, in case you lose a bulb or two, it would be well worth it. I have a friend who has one of the first DLP sets made, and it still works perfectly. Another has lost 3 bulbs over the last year. $$$

Thats a good point. I forgot about the extended warranty. And what do you mean that the wheel will be gone soon? Do you mean that all RPTV's will be obsolite soon?

No, they will switch to LED lamps with DLP which eliminates the color wheel.

It is CRITICAL that you know that just because this TV is a 1080p display, there is no mention in the literature on the Toshiba website that this display actually accepts 1080p on it's inputs. So, if you get it, don't try to feed it a 1080p source like Blu-ray or PS3 as the TV doesn't appear to support it.

FYI: This is typical of 99% of 1080p displays produced before 2006. Only the newest models of 1080p displays, including the new Sony SXRD models, tend to accept 1080p on their inputs. I am sure the NEXT generation of Toshiba 1080p displays will accept 1080p, and they will advertise as such.

Right now, if 1080p matters, be very cautious of what you purchase.

Thanks man, I totally forgot about checking if it had an input for it. I know that a lot of the tvs dont have a digital input like you said. The only crappy thing is there are so many options that I don't know what to do, lol. I want something now, but I want to also wait for the better stuff in the future. I might have to wait awhile, maybe after I get a PS3 or something.

The only three that I know for sure have 1080p capable inputs for their 1080p displays are the NEW Sony SXRD displays, the HP 1080p DLP models, and the Westinghouse 1080p 42" LCD flat panels.

I am sure that more and more are emeging, but I don't know them off the top of my head... yet. I think the new Samsung stuff does... The new Pioneer 1080p plasmas? Samsung will have a decent price. The Sonys look really good right now as well.

Well, for what it's worth, the Mitsubishi WD-65731 claims to support "native 1080p display through the HDMI input". Seeing as I just bought one I hope they're telling the truth :)
