Why not save a bit more until you hit $400 and get an SVS PB10?

I'm going to build off this. Save a LOT more, as you're going to want a nice powerful 12inch for that room, at least. I say save up a grand and grab 2 decent subwoofers.

Gotta pay to play.

+1, the room is just too big, save for two decent subs. Unless you're going to sit in one spot relatively close to the sub you will definately have plenty of dead spots in the room.

Subwoofer Choice

I hope you're not buying a sub based on what somebody tells you and what they say in a magazine.
You have to listen to them. Most people I've met, including music critics can't even tell if a guitar is in tune. Why would you trust their opinions?
