I have had the original DVD for years and disappointed in the Digital 5.1 sound. Tonight I was getting really pissy about how bad it sounded... and in an act of desperation, tried dolby surround. Receiver reported 2.0, set the receiver for PLII, and it's the original great sound I remember. Anyone else seen this problem?

Never had the "original" but I did get the Special Collector's Edition with DTS 6.1, and it is really good. You will shake the house when those F-15's light up. Love the opening sequence/titles with the classic theme and the carrier and the jets....crank it up:)

I agree the DTS track on the Special Edition version sounds awesome.

Let me ask you. Is that edition anamorhic? I am having a tough time with the non-anamorhic ones on a big screen.

Did you guys order the DTS edition? I went to Best Buy and I've never seen it there.

But with all the holiday madness, I'll probably have to stay away from Best Buy until probably February.

A buddy of mine told me this movie was a little strange and I never knew what he meant. Till he pointed out: guys running around in mini-towels, flexing on the beach while playing volleyball......go figure, who would have known. The jet jocks in The Military Channel (formerly Wings Channel) don't behave like that:D LOL!!!! (at least not in public) Note: to my buddies in the Air Force (you know who you are) don't go dropping no cluster bombs over my house! My wife won't like it, then you can't come over for ribs no mo'(you know who you are:D )

Such a terrible movie, but fun in a moronic sort of way. Very quotable, too. I've lost count of how many times I've told someone "you can be my wingman anytime!":D And "talk to me, Goose."

The show is massively gay, too. I don't know why I didn't notice when it first came out, but there seems to be quite a homosexual undertone to much of it. Same for Predator- I never noticed back in the day how very gay the part is where everyone is waxed and oiled up, shirtless, pulling on the rope.

Uh, "not that there's anything wrong with that!":D

Yup, my buddy pointed out the same thing about TG, I didn't realize Predator was out running around picking up daisies:D LOL!!!

You need to understand the close relationships these guys develop after time together so much, same pilot and RIO, 9 month +/- deployments. Like a family. A finely honed team. Then, young guys will behave strangely at times.

Pointing out a few technical errors with the DVD, transfer which are picture on the first edition was incorrectly framed at 2.00:1which resulted in a wider height aspect ratio. Top Gun was filmed in Super35 flat lens and framed at 2.35:1 for the 35mm prints and blown up for the 2.2:1 aspect ratio for the 70mm six-track Dolby Stereo with split-surrounds. The soundtrack version we had for the DVD version was more exact sounding I explain in moment.

The newer version of Top Gun was nothing more than to try and celibate this classic film where in the home cinema community it had become a classic Dolby surround demo back in the mid 1980’s though to the mid 1990’s with the Laserdisc version which boasted six-track Dolby Stereo though the use of Dolby AC-3 digital encoding.

Having never of owning that version, I heard it was great.

With the rather late realise of Top Gun on region 2 DVD which kept getting delayed countless times here in the UK. I was greatly looking forwards with eager anticipation however has it turned out I was rather disappointed with one specific point in the films soundtrack I’ll get to that in moment. The framing of the film was great and the original Paramount logo looked wonderful setting the tone of the film just right.

“I want someone’s butt I want it now.” The soundtrack was botched with the dialogue panning and I just don’t understand why some re-recoding mixer who probably wasn’t involved with the original films project would reposition some dialogue panning where it creates realism the scene where Maverick flybys an aircraft flight control tower at low altitude and over 600konts really ticked of the control tower officer where his voice his heard to the left as the camera slowly dollies along the hallway.

This is the crowning disappointment that said to me! From now on I’m going to be very cautious at buying these dreadful so called special editions, there are a few that I could hail as great but if I had to play the film to someone, someone who has seen it before but hasn’t got a good memory for sound I would more than likely walk out the room until the scene has finished!

I've had this for a while but never got around to watch it. I popped in the special edition last night and was blown away by the sound. I remember this movie from back in the day and I can tell you it never sounded this good to me. I was very impressed with the quality of the transfer, and if you're looking for the best promotional video the Navy has to offer then this is it!
