Build a fort and install them around the perimeter of the ceiling, with one sub per wall. OK, seriously- if you have an outdoor area that needs speakers, mount them at regular intervals for best coverage with less SPL. Add a sub if you can, but you'll have happier neighbors if you don't need to crank it.
