Tone Controls on Receivers (HK)

I currently own an HK7300 that I am happy with; however, I recently moved to a new home w/all hardwoods and very reflective properties. I have tamed the room as much as the wife will allow with rugs, furniture, etc; however, I have felt the need to adjust the tone controls as the sound coming from my AXIOM M60's is way too "high/trebly/fatiguing". I have 3 questions around this:

First- What is the frequency usually of a treble control? I have cut it between 4-6 db and am wondering it that is not an ideal solution.

Second- When I cut this, if I also cut the Bass the same amount am I ultimately negating the change? Or are the two frequencies potentially both reflecting and therefore, reducing both tone controls and raising the overall volume a good thing?

Third- For HK owners, aren't the tone controls supposed to be different for each input? Mine appear to be universal regardless of whether or not I select "Global or Independent" in the Speaker Setup.

Thanks for any advice on Tone Controls in general.

If you're talking about a generic treble/bass tone control, it's going to affect the entire Hz range. I wouldn't adjust it too much, or you'll lose a lot in the mids as well. Have you tried cantering the speakers themselves to aim just outside of your seated position, instead of directly at you? There's also a technique of installing felt around the tweeter of the speaker to tame it. One other option is an updated outboard eq - something that could cut certain Hz without enveloping the entire spectrum of mids and highs as your tone controls do.

Just out of curiosity, what type of treatments do you have on your walls? The opposite wall of your Axioms should be absorbing some of the highs. Would the wife be opposed to a tapestry?

The manual for the receiver should state the frequencies pn which the tone controls work. In general, the bass tone control usually is centered at 50 or 100 Hz with a range of +/- 12 dB and the treble tone control is centered at 20 KHz with a range of +/- 12 dB. Adjusting the bass control will not affect the treble as the frequencies on which it operates are very far apart.
