I've thought about making my own sealed sub cabinets. I have all the tools and there aren't many secrets on making well braced and non resonant (to a degree) cabinets.

Cabinets are where the real costs are incurred (or cut) by manufacturers. My time is free and I'm pretty confident my skills are at least up to third world standards (which is where most cabinets are made).
One thing I think about is how much less expensive stand alone amps are than plate amps. It seems that plate amps run 80%-100% more expensive. I also think it'd be tougher to mount to a cylinder. Getting hands on the 24" preform is tough. Also I'm pretty ignorant as to specs regarding driver size vs. cabinet volume. I'd want the 24" to utilize them as side tables, but getting them 24" tall for a reasonable height would result in about 6 cu ft enclosures. Not sure if it'd be overkill. I kind of feel 4 12" would be alright if I could tube them down to 16hz or so.

Easy. There’s the software. Model and design with the driver of choice.
Now go to a concrete supply place and ask for sonotube in whatever diameter you want, and they’ll probably cut it to length for you. Make a circle jig for a router, or take your time with a jigsaw and cut out the baffles.(or maybe a local car audio or cabinet place can cut round baffles to fit$

Go here and buy the right port/s and grills and feet etc.

Raising subwoofers up from the floor a foot or two will change the way it sounds and how it plays in the room.
