to vibrate, or not to vibrate

OK.. I'm kinda new to figuring out how all this works. I'm making plans for building my house.. which will have a movie room.

Question 1: If I buy a system, and want to add aditional speakers/woofer, do I need a more powerful system? Or I guess, what I'm wondering, do you have to, subtract how much power each speaker uses from the total power of the system, or is it, as long as a single one doesn't take more than the total, you're ok? Hmm.. I'm sure this is all probably obvious stuff.

Question 2: How bad of a thing is it to mix different brands?

Question 3: OK.. My main question here: I'm not even sure if there's an answer for what I'm looking for. I love mega base for movies. I want to FEEL it when a building explodes! :D So, can I stick sub woofers under the seating.. or, is there actually a company that makes vibraters for the seats? lol. ya.. anyway.

Thanks!

PS, oops, I admit that now I found the newbies section..

Welcome!

1. Yes and no. It's hard to give a definitive answer without any specifics.

2. Yes, there are tactile transducers that are specially made to shake your furniture so you can feel the bass. There are a variety of models from different manufacturers that span a large budget range.

So before we make recommendations, tell us about what you'd like to accomplish. What is your budget for your new system/system upgrade? How big is your room? What are your other goals and restrictions?

1.) Your speakers are all powered of the reveiver or amp, EXCEPT for the subwoofer.

Subwoofers use their own built in or external amps. When your buying speakers pay attention to the RMS power and sensitivity. Anything lower then 90dB sensitivity might require extra amplification (depending on speaker type and ohm rating).

2.) You can mix brands in certain situations. IE: a TV doesn't need to match a dvd player or anything other component.

Speakers should match except for the subwoofer. It plays a different part of the audio spectrum. Because the speakers don't play what the subwoofer plays, you don't have anything to match.

3.) www.thebuttkicker.com Bolt these to your seats and and it will shake you like no subwoofer can.

if you want to feel bass, then you should get tactile transducers to stick under your couch.

buttkicker is one option, they were reviewed on here with good results. They are made to bolt on to the couch , but have kits so you can put them underneath the couch as well

Crowsontech.com makes the tes-100, which imo is pretty significantly more realistic and accurate. It sits under the couch legs as well.

buttkicker system is about $500-700 i think, with everything.

the crowson tech tes-100 system will be about 800-1000, including everything.

either purchase will improve your system quite a bit. i love mine.

just looked on crowsons site, and their new amp isnt available yet,

id just buy the tes-100 couch kit, and a seperate more powerful amp like i did.
ive used the crowson amp they have on the site now, and it works well, but i like to have a little more power. They said a bigger one is being developed, with 4 channels and much more power. dont know when its supposed to come out though

I sat in a theater seat at a electronics store demo a couple weeks ago that had built-in effects and it just felt weird, I wouldn't want it in my house.

it all depends on how nice their set up was.. if it was a buttkicker or TES then id be surprised if you didnt think it was cool.

they make cheap ones that do a horrible job, maybe thats why you didnt like it?

RLA,

yeah, was looking for the real retail prices (not SRP) and where in canada to get them ...

I did read the buttkicker review, BUT the problem is, I got the link for the buttkicker review from one of the forum threads.

It's not easy to find the review from this page:
http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/index.php (in fact, it might not be there)

edit: oh, now I realize the reviews were inside the category "loudspeakers" instead of "misc HT equipment."

so, you think 1 buttkicker is sufficient for a 3 seater couch?

The BK-LFE kit would be a good start for your couch retail $699 US (you can find it much cheaper on-line but I don’t want to promote or recommend retail sites). The kit has everything you need to install the system. I prefer two LFE's in a large couch but I think you would be happy with just one and you can always add later as your budget permits. Sorry about the confusion I know its difficult to find reviews.

thanks, RLA ... i was playing around with my sub last night, it rattles the couch fine ... is the buttkicker different from a sub rumbling the couch?

im actually still in the quest to search for the "chest thump" ... know where to look?

DD18 not shaking the couch enough? turn it up more:p
I had a mate over the other day so I turned the sub up a bit and played some demo's of WOTW and X-Men, those two alone almost tore the house down:cool: also some great bass in these tracks(at the bottom of the page) Check out the one called 'Bass I love You' from Bassotronics(has peaks at 15Hz)

Happy listening
BTW Mike, hope you had a great trip, cheers:)
