To upgrade or repair?

I have a 11-year old Yamaha RVX-V995 receiver. I am having problems with both of the digital audio inputs. At times in the past, I've re-inserted the cable and by shifting it a bit, it manages to work again. No such luck any more.

Do I get it repaired or do I upgrade to a HDMI-capable unit?

What would be the equivalent receiver today?

I tried out a RX-V465 today, but I'm having problems running the cable set-top box through the HDMI. By just using the HDMI for both audio and video, I am getting some handshake problems (choppy audio). This problem also occurs with an Western Digital Media Player. Had no problems with these on the 995. Mind you, no video through the receiver, just audio. HDMI outputs went directly to TV (including via an HDMI switch box).

Not sure if these problems are occurring because of the entry-level unit. Would a higher-end model work any better (e.g. 765)?

Appreciate any advice or input...thanks!

If it were me I'd upgrade but that's just my take on old gear. Somebody else will probably be along to suggest repairing it. As long as the repair isn't half the cost of a replacement and the 995 meets your needs I'd say both are valid schools of thought.

If you do decide to replace then my choice would be either a refurbished Onkyo TX-SR707 (last year's model with HDMI 1.3a) or a new TX-NR708 with HDMI 1.4 to make it a bit more future proof. If you live in the US you can get the refurb from Accessories For Less for under $500. The 708 will be closer to $800. If you don't need preouts or 4ohm stability then a $500-600 TX-SR608 might meet your needs.
