To build or what to buy for new subwoofer

Good evening need some help on getting setup with a new sub or two. Currently I am running a jbl cinema 125a and a jbl pu8 on either side of the tv. They do alright but could use a lot better for the size of the room. I have drawn up my living room in the basement on how I have it all set up.

My main speakers a some good old centrios from radio shack a while back and they do the job pretty good for the time being.

My cieling speakers are a 5 inch Russound can't remember the model but they sound really good.

Receiver is a denon avr 688 . Which does the trick compared to my old 5.1 pioneer system.

Been reading on the site for I while. Wish I would of found it before I finished the basement 4 months ago and I would of changed stuff but Ohwell. Now I am carpenter so building something is really easy been building sub boxes for behind the seats of my trucks for each one I've owned. Just don't know what to buy for parts and what kind of box to build or do I just go out and buy two new subs but that's no fun is it.

If anybody could point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks scott

First, what's your budget? Subs that are worth the price of admission, are not cheap; Big magnet, amp, sturdy box.

Second, forget everything you think you know about subs. Car audio does not translate well to home theater. Thats not to dismiss your accomplishments, we just get a fair number of people trying to use drivers that are designed to rely on cabin gain.

From my readings on here I kinda figured that car subs and home stuff is totally different from each other. And price wise I can build the box for free so I got 500 bucks for amp and sub. Canadian dollars so if I can buy the stuff in Canada that would be great. Thanks scott

^ This, and anyway to convince the significant other to move that couch a few feet out from those back walls? It's for the sake of sound! (and will allow those surrounds to provide a more immersive experience)

Not to mention 20' away from a 65" TV is kind of a waste. A laptop on your lap probably gives you a better field of view!

YMMV, but if it is a WAF situation, try finding pictures in "Home and Garden" type magazines of sofas away from the wall with nice cozy and attractive spaces behind them to show her. Let the AV benefits be a by-product of her interior decoration project.:)

And more importantly having some opens space behind the listening position is one of the most important things you can do to improve your room acoustics. The space behind the listener tends to reduce some of the audible reflections.

I couldn't agree more having the couch out four or so feet but with 3 kids it would only turn into a fort or toy box. I have to take my bloody subs apart every week to take the stuff my 1 year old has shoved in the ports.

Well surely there is a compromise to be found in there somewhere? Give them a fort space in exchange for allowing them to live after having messed with your subs? ;-)

Someday it will get moved away from the wall or once that mocking jay movie comes out on blue ray I'll move the couch out and she should be able to hear the difference.
Before I had the couch I sat in the middle of the room and it was awsome and the bass was great now with the couch on the wall I get nothing now. Night and day difference on either side of the bulkhead. With that being said I've moved the jbl to the end of the couch and it's way better.
Funny thing is buddy brought over a couple of his sounds stage subs and ran them on either side of the bulkhead and the jbl blew them away. He pissed. He spent 700 bucks on them and I spent 50 at a garage sale.

So should I run two subs or just one big one. I have a buddy that said he could get me a deal on a klipsch 10 inch don't know the model but worth 450 bucks.
The rest of the system sounds great just need a sub

Thanks scott

Two is better than one, but one good sub will be fine as well. For your room I would be looking for atleast 12" drivers or bigger.
