The other day I picked up Beethovens' 9 Symphonies on used vinyl. Herbert Von karajan was conducting the Belrlin Philharmonic and supposedly its his 1st recording attemp of Beethoven's material as its a mono recording. The mono put me off for a bit until I realized how rich in sound and textture these recordings are. The amount of detail in these recordings is short of phenomenal. These pressings are made by Deutche Gramaphone.

You have a world class conductor in front of a world class orchestra recorded by a world class record company. No surprise there. Actually, I think there have been better collections of the 9 symphonies, many of which are stereo and digitally recorded. Strangely I like the series recorded by the Birmingham (England) Symphony. It is a little less "ponderous" than the Berlin Philharmonic recordings.

I just got Beethoven's 1-8 Symphonies (Claudio Abbado) on DVD-Audio. The 9th Symphony is truly hard to find on DVD-A for some reasons. They sound great, but I wonder how they compare to stereo or mono?

Yeah, I know of others who prefer the first recording of the cycle by Karajan. I never heard the first recording cycle though... interesting. I've owned 5th, 6th, 7th from the "second recordings".

All of my Beethoven symphony listening is now with Gardiner. I love it!

I have roughly 40 recordings from Deutche Gramaphone and they really know how to "mic" and record a performance. A while back I pixked up a Mono pressing of Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" and although I have 7 versions of this from Telarc and others the Mono has its own quality sound and listening charm.
