Tivo Bolt and Yamaha RX-V383 5.1 Surround Problem

No matter what I do I cannot get surround sound from the Tivo Bolt.

I have read through many forums and I cannot find an answer.

Here are the details:

I have a Tivo Bolt and a Yamaha RX-V383 receiver.

1. Have tried both HDMI and Optical outs on the Tivo Bolt.
2. Tivo output mode is set to Dolby.
3. "Signal Info" on RX-V383 receiver shows DD, 3/2/0.1, so it is getting a digital surround signal.
4. Ran several surround tests, all sounds from front speakers. Even when surround test shows rear speakers should be sounding, sound comes from front speakers.
5. Running the Tone Test from Yamaha menu, sound comes from each speaker as expected, including the rear speakers, no problem. So the rear speakers are connected and working. I have to assume this is a decoding or signal problem.
6. I have connected my Samsung TV optical audio out directly to Yamaha using same Optical cord that I use on the Tivo and 5.1 sound goes through just fine using Antenna or any of the TV apps, no problem. So I know the Yamaha and speakers are set up correctly.
7. Updated Yamaha firmware to 1.08. Did not help.
8. I have rebooted both boxes. Did not help.

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated

If the Yamaha is showing a 5.1 input, that means the Tivo is set up right. Keep in mind that unless the program you’re watching is presented in 5.1, you aren’t going to get surround sound.

Edit. Let me look at my TiVo Roamio settings.

Thank you Wayne. I play the exact same Surround Sound Test video through my TV app and through Tivo. Both times, the Input Signal on the Yamaha AVR shows DD 3/2/0.1. However, only the TV app input actually sends sounds to the rear speakers. The input coming from the Tivo comes through front speakers only.

Almost sounds like it's getting LPCM (thus the 3/2/.1 but possibly only 2.0 being in actual use)....don't think the Dolby setting in the source would do that tho.

There’s a setting in the Roamio of “Use Dolby” or “Use PCM”. I have it set to “Use Dolby”.

Edit: HD HBO and some other shows are 5.1 Dolby Digital but there are so many recorded shows in 2.0 that I leave Dolby Surround DSU upmixer on all the time. Then the Yamahas automatically switch from DSU to DD.

By the way, Dolby DSU is a great upmixer. You can’t go wrong using DSU.

What modern programs on TIVO that doesn't have DD that you recorded?
Are you recording from cable TV or apps in the TIVO?
Does that TIVO have test tones in it?
May need to try all the different audio settings in the TIVO.
