Time for new DVD player?

This is my first post. I have been visiting for some time and based upon Audioholics recommendation I recently purchased an Athena Micra 6 speaker system. It is powered by a Yamaha HTR-5850 receiver which is connected to the Panasonic TH-42PHD7UY.

I am now wondering whether I should upgrade my DVD player, the JVC XV-N40 which I purchased in 2003 or so. Would I see a difference with something like a Pioneer DV-588A? Would I see a difference at any price level or is progressive scan equivalent? The room is 11x12 with the distance to the TV being about 10 feet straightahead. Perhaps I should also note that at 55 my eyesight has lost a little detail if you know what I mean.

I just upgraded my dvd player, and it made a huge difference, but my old one was, failing. If you don't already know this, progressive scan only works for certain tv's, so, if can't use it, don't buy a dvd player based on that feature.

I should have clarified that I am not having any problem that I know of - seems to be working fine. The TV is a HD plasma so it takes progressive scan. The DVD player is connected through the component cables and I don't anticipate upgrading to DVI or HDMI as I would have to buy an additional blade to install in the TV to add that capability. The component cables result in a great picture.

I am uncertain that I will move to playing DVD audio, SACD etc, as I have not used it for music. I would probably like to have the capability in a player and understand that I would have to buy the multichannel cables.

if it isn't failing, I would ask yourself what you need, and see if this dvd player meets your needs. I upgraded to a denon 555 from a panasonic, and the picutre quality it better as well as audio performance.


Those might be things to consider, and maybe you can find something in your budget.

Your now working and not that old dvd player is fine. Its a 2003 model, and by getting another standard dvd player you will not notice much of a difference. However if you were to buy a upscaling dvd player, there would be a difference. Yes it does produce a sharper picture. But to be perfectly honest as you said, your 55 and your sight is not 20/20. Would you notice a difference, probably not. So the cost of an upgrade really could be used elsewhere. If you still want a upgrade and are considering a upscaling dvd player there are a few that come to mind. However the only one I know that upscales through the component (rgb) over others dvi and hdmi is the NeuNeo 2081 or 2085. That way you would not need to get any extra cables. The others worth mentioning are Denon 3910, Oppo 971, Panasonic S97. However these models you would have to get a extra cable, if bought new, the box may supply a super cheap cable. But even it could or should be replaced.
