CI stands for custom installer and simply means they've opened it up to control via the rs-232 interface. How many people are going to write low level serial code to control their receiver?

Addy,

First, the OP is using a Bose system, a $2000+ receiver isn't necessary for a 5.1 Bose system, sorry but it's not. Speakers should account for at least 2/3 of the speaker budget, and IMO Bose is overpriced, so the receiver to power such speakers at a maximum should be 1/4 of the price of the speakers just to have some features like HDMI.:)

Second, the Onkyo TX-SR605 is not a heavy weight, but like mentioned before, for a small room with small speakers, a large high end receiver like the Denon AVR-3808ci or even the Onkyo TX-SR805.;)

current AV is a Denon 3300. As far as speaker upgrade, I wish, but in reality due to room and space available, probably not.
Have you checked out Orb Audio? They blow Bose out of the water in every category and are quite small. Since you have a sub already, 5 satellites would cost $499.

I love their advertisement. "Balls of Steel, Need we Say More?"

On the subject of THX, don't worry about it. Base your decision on price, sound, and features.

In wall speakers

The OP may want to check out Triad in-wall speakers. I recently installed Triads and have been very happy with them (of course based on my limited experience my happiness may not mean anything:)) Triads are sealed so the sound is predictable. They do cost a little more than some of the other in-walls. The only drawback I found is that they sell through a network of custom installers. But with a little homework I found a source that gave me a good price and did not include installation.

Best

(now I guess I will get rid of that pesky message that tells me that I have never posted every time I read a thread:D)

THX "CERTIFICATION" costs money. MOSTLY... it's just another way to milk a little more more money from us consumers. We are "SOLD" the idea that we "NEED" THX cerification so we "DEMAND" it. Manufacturers respond and pay the money. Then "WE PAY" 3X that for the frickin' "LABEL".

Aren't we, as a consumer public, SICK OF THIS TYPE OF CRUD?!?!

My receiver came with it for $450. I doubt that it would have only cost $150 without the certification. :)

Yes, its all a huge conspiracy to screw the consumer over . While a lack of THX certification does not mean a unit is bad there are certain things you can expect from a THX certified unit such as certain power performance in a receiver which is measured in a way that is more demanding than most internal to the company power tests are. Also, you get a pretty nice DSP which is great for movies and games.

Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it is voodoo or bad it really does just mean you don't understand it. I suggest reading up on things before you corner yourself with such poor arguments.

If you really want to complain about marketing look at companies like Bose and Monster, not companies like THX who have done so much for the industry, like ohh, I don't know, standardization...

Edit: So I guess my stance is don't buy an item simply because it does/doesn't have THX, but don't bash one simply because it does.

ANSWER: I didn't intend to bash any gear. I was bashing THX Certification fees that we all pay for;)
