there are some critical difference on some model. those difference are not easily spot on spec sheet.

although all receiver from $300 to $5000 can do 24bit/196KHz the chips used to decord are different. on lower end model, u may see Analog Device all purpose chip. on slightly better model, u will see Burr Brown 1791. some use more than 1 of the chip. However, on the high end model, you will see BurrBrown 1796. on Denon 5308, you will see total of Sixteen!! BB1796 chip!

the difference? 1796 has S/N ratio of 123dB, while 1791 only 110dB. 1796chip is at least 5 times more expensive than 1791.

on lower end model, one power transformer is used for audio. video, preamp, poweramp. On high end model, you will see troido transformer. On Onkyo, ONLY 905 is using troiod transformer.

video processing. on regular model, you will see idvdo or similier processer. on Denon 5308, it's Realta HQV. (the video processing broad alone cost few hundred dollars)

Onkyo........ Damm I was expecting alot of choices. I figured I would hear Martinez and Harmon Kardon....... If the best way to go is a receiver and another power amp then so be it I'm not limited to suggestions. The reason I was looking to save a few bucks on the amp is this.

The amp will most likely burn-up or be outdated at some time. I dropped the cash on the speaker because they will be recessed into the wall at construction. So they need to last along time. I also know a few people who have Klipsch speakers that are over 30years old and they still sound awesome.

The amp is for straight-up sound. I will be running individual HDMI cables to the projector from each component. So I do not need any video switching. I just need to have the speakers sound as clear as possible at a low volume as well as when I'm testing my sound-proofing abalities. So if Denon is the way to go so be it.

I just thought another receiver or receiver and seperate amp may be available at a lower cost with the same sound quality. The denon is a all in one sick pice of equipment that will do everything on could need. The thing is I don't need everything.
I JUST NEED THE SOUND. (THX ULTRA 2 CERTIFIED)

Thanks to all who have already posted I do appreciate it. I look forward to more suggestions......

Note: A lot of power amplifiers would meet the THX specifications if they where benchtested for it (many of them don't because it costs the manufacturer money to get the THX branding). For example, the Emotiva XPA-5 that's coming out would handle just about any speaker at any load without breaking a sweat. It comes out in the next few months and will sell for $800. You could wait a bit longer for the LMC-2 pre/pro to come out to pair with the XPA-5.;) This combo will pretty much beat any receiver in terms of power, even the ones with THX Ultra II and all the fancy pants stuff.:D
