Don;t know much about drag racing, but Physics!

Other than the crashes I see on you tube - or two guys in dresses running down the street - that's what I know about drag racing.

What was the distance, 1/8 (660 feet) or 1/4 (1320 feet) mile, because;

if it was an 1/8 or 660 feet, than from the equations for distance and acceleration

V<sup>2</sup>=V<sub>o</sub><sup>2</sup> + 2 x A x S

and

S=V<sub>o</sub> x T + 0.5 x A x T<sup>2</sup>

and

S=(V<sub>o</sub> + V) x 0.5 x T

Assuming a standing start, the equations reduce to

S = V x 0.5 x T
S = 0.5 x A x T<sup>2</sup>
V2 = 2 x A x S

if

S=660 and T=11.8 than A=9.48, therefore V= 111.8 ft/sec or 76.2 mph

if

S=1320 and T=11.8 than A=18.96, therefore V=223.6 ft/sec or 152.45 mph

Each speed represents speed of the car at the end of the measured distance, so if you speed was 118 mph or 173 ft/sec than the race distance was 1020.7 feet (depending on where the "trap" is set).

So what was the distance?

You lost me at the first V2 :confused::eek: I just wait for the green light at the tree and try to get to the 1/4 mile marker at the end as fast as I can :D

Nice bike and nice color. I loved that color scheme when it first came out. I've been riding for the last 18 years or so. I have 3 bikes, 2 CBR954RR and a Yamaha FZ1. I ride a lot and I do some riding schools every year (Reg Pridmore's Class). About a month and a half ago I had a serious accident on Azusa Canyon, CA. It was serious enough that I had to be airlifted to LAC+USC hospital. I don't remember a thing, that day is gone, so all I know is what I have been told by my riding partners that day. I ended up with a little fracture on my neck and a wound on my left leg. I had to wear a neck brace for 6 weeks, and I finally took it off last Tuesday. The one thing the really struck me the most on my last doctor appointment was that when I asked the doctor if I was fit enough to ride again, she gave me this look and said "Don't ride again, you were very close to be dead or paraplegic. You were one of the very few lucky ones". My wife gets teary eyed every time she remembers what happened the day of my accident, she got to the hospital and saw me in this resuscitation room. I love motorcycles a lot but this accident puts everything on a different perspective, so I don't know if I should ride again but in a more relaxed way (slow down) or just quit altogether.
Any way, be careful, and don't forget to wear your gear all the time. It saved my life, my helmet, Arai, took the major blow when I hit the ground. The rest of my gear was unscathed, even my motorcycle suffered minor cosmetic damage.

I concur with caupina. Your melon is fragile but you seem to part of an organized high risk behavior group. Race tracks and helmets are great for that kind of fun. I wasn't that smart but I was lucky and I quit before ... well, before. I have had the distinct pleasure of ripping down the 401 @ 150 mph mid day. It was also that kind of behavior that convinced me to quit while I was ahead. My heart still skips a beat when some kid on a rice rocket zips by like he's trying to achieve escape velocity to break free of the earth's gravitational pull.

I use the word 'kid' because you don't get to be old by riding like that.:eek:

Hey Mudcat,

Assuming a constant rate of acceleration maybe but it doesn't work that way.:) MPH will very depending on how hard the vehicle accelerates throughout the pass.:cool:

They look like 1/4 mile figures.

Do you usually see men in dresses running down the street???:D

Thanks I really like the colors on my bike the blue looks sweet at night almost like a candy blue and changes in different lighting . Wow you are very lucky with your accident, I use to ride at Azuza canyon to , I used to live in Huntington Beach california and its dangerous in Azuza canyon. I've had many bikes to starting with a honda 95 f3 600, 96 Suzuki gsxr 600, 98 gxsr 750, 98 Kawasaki zx 9 , 99 yamaha R1 , 99 HONDA CBR 929 and now 06 CBR 1000rr not including a dirt bike and a old yamaha . I took about a 8 year layoff from riding but kept my motorcycle indorsement and then was going crazy I had this empty spot everytime I saw some crotch rockets railing or cruising. I bought my Cobra and strated drag racing to try and fill the void it helped but not completely so I bought my cbr 1000rr last year.Its crazy dangerous on a bike especialy riding the twisties on the street becauyse there not made to crash on like a track as you know and im guilty of that to but intend to ride more at the track then the street this year . Im sorry to hear of your accident and glad you came out ok . Just take some time off and im sure you'll make the wright choice. I use to ride the crest in so cal and Ortega hwy to . Lot of good place to ride down there for sure .

Oh there 1/4 mile figures for sure and mine:rolleyes: lol If I was going to make any up Id have faster trap speeds and lower 1/4 mile times :) Actualy you could run 15 second 1/4 mile time and have a trap speed of 118mph or within a couple of mph its strange your trap speed wont change to much even if you have a real shitty 60' or just a bad run . So those calculations even though look good that Mutcat put up arent accurate . There are calculators on line that can give you a more accurate idea of what you should run in the 1/4 mile buy putting your weight of your car or motorcycle along with your wheel horsepower/torque and it will give you a pretty good idea but wont be dead on. There good if your trying to figure out what you should or could be running at the track :cool:

I did and live to talk about but it, theres a lot of luck involved a long with skill and im more wise now with a hec of a lot more wisdom . I AM NOT OLD OLD BUT LETS JUST SAY EARLY 40'S :) I Seem to be attracted to high risk activities even my job is one is of the most dangerous. I think a few years a go it was at the top :eek:

Plenty of nice places to go riding here. My usual ride on the weekends is Angeles Crest and Forest Hwy, but I've been to many places here like Hwy33, Palomar, Hwy243, Malibu, Ortega Hwy, etc. I miss riding already but just like you said, I'm gonna take some time off, get fit, and probably start all over again. I'll get the 954 fixed and ready, but for the time being I'll ride the FZ1, which is much more of a tame and mellow ride than the 954.

Just like you I'm on the early 40s (42 close to 43) and bones, wounds and bruises don't heal that quickly now:eek:. Just be safe. Here is a picture of my toys.
