Well, you could adjust the tone controls to make your sports sound better. Of course, the down side would be that perhaps your movies would suffer.

Or, you could go on enjoying your movies and simply learn to accept the fact that not everything is perfect and the sound on sports suck.

which is the higher priority in your mind? Your choice.

System sounds good on movies and thin on sports

List your system to give us a little more information. I assume you have this coming through you ht setup. Proper adjustment of the center channel and bass in the room may be the problem.

Turn it up.
I have resisted this far, but, the OP is missing in action, so why not :).
Hopper, take up watching Sumo Wrestling :D.

On a more serious note, NFL Football has good sound for sports. How do they sound?

Tips!

Ive found that typical sports are just broadcast in "thin" sounding audio. If im gonna have people over to say watch the SuperBowl, i normally go into the settings before everyone comes over & make a few changes.

I change all speakers from my normal Small/80hz to Large+Bass

I turn my subs up a good 3-4dB.

Then i turn on my Yamaha's "Entertainment-Sports" DSP. I normally have all processing bypassed in "Straight" mode otherwise.

Doing these 3 things makes a big improvement in sport programing. Its a temporary change i make only for get togethers like sports. Just remember to change your settings back once finished.

So thats what i found works for me!!

Sumo!!?...more like Biggest Loser!! Hahah

I guess its all subjective as to what sounds good or not. Im comparing what sport channels sound like in comparison to a bluray. Of course the quality isnt anywhere near DTS-HD or the likes. It can be decent but i am in agreement with the OP that it does have a "thinner" sound, specially basketball. Football is a bit better, but because i know what my system is capable of i hold other programing to a higher standard. Making a couple setting adjustments to get closer to that quality is something im willing to do.

that's the way it is on my system too, like for example the NFL I watch,

I just turn up the bass a little and turn up the cc,

the majority of the sports broadcasts comes through the cc anyway, but I do like the crowd noise in the side & back surround speakers,

and I usually use Dolby Digital EX for tv btw

Dan:
In your case what id try is actually turning down the Center & in turn increase the master volume a bit more. This way you more of a wide/surround effect. That is similar to what my Yamaha does in the DSP "Sports" mode. It bumps up the surrounds & mains. Otherwise EVERYTHING can sound like its coming only from the Center. Just a thought!!

also, with all the sports I watch,I know that each network sounds a little different too, like FOX,NBC,& CBS all have distinctly different sound output.

my experience with watching sports led me to remove the center channel speaker from the system. now things sound perfect.

thanks :), I usually like listening to sports in DD EX or PLIIx movie, and I get the commentators voice to sound good on the cc while still getting the 7ch surround effects of the whistles and spectator sounds, etc, etc

but I will try that this weekend and see if I like it that way.

GO NINERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
