For you Thiel fans, Crutchfield has partnered with Thiel to sell it's speaker lines on line, catalog and B&M stores. I personally find Crutchfield very expensive.

Yeah, Crutchfield is pretty pointless. Their prices are just as high as any retail store. The only plus I see is saving on tax.

I got the latest Crutchfield catalog yesterday and saw the Thiels on the cover. I know Thiel to be an excellent speaker maker but nevertheless, I can't imagine how anybody in their right mind would ever pay 10K for a pair of speakers and buy them un-heard through a catalog. If you're inclined to pay 10 grand for speakers, there are plenty of excellent brands and I would imagine that part of the fun of buying them would be sitting in audio salons, being offered wine and snacks while you audition them and finally making the big decision. Theil? Vandersteen? Martin Logan? If Crutchfield isn't offering a good price, how would that make sense? It doesn't work for me. Maybe they are aiming at Joe Farmer, living in Manitoba, hundreds of miles from a good audio store.

They have also picked up PS Audio Amplifiers. These are some interesting choices on Crutchfields part.

Do they still sell the $7500 Marantz monoblocks?

The Thiel speakers are 4950 each but you do get free shipping. I have no clue is this is a good price. I agree that anyone with this kind of budget would be most unlikely to be shopping on-line. I thought the same of One Call carrying the top Klipsch heritage line.

What type of music would make these speakers shine?

I agree that you generally can do better than Crutchfield if you are shopping on price alone. But one thing I will say about them is that I have found their customer service to be outstanding.

For example, a lot has been made lately about some internet only dealers that allow you to test something risk free for 30 days. Crutchfield does that as well, but the big difference I have found is that Crutchfield will pay your return shipping on the item (unless it is something huge that requires special delivery charges). That sure beats the $80 I just spent to ship back a product to another manufacturer.
