Theater so far

Last year we put an addition on our house and we agreed I would be able to use the basement for a theater and it would house all the equipment for a whole house audio system. Well I am by no means done but I at least have everything up and running. I still have to install the drop ceiling, paint, lighting/electrical, acoustic treatments and seating.

The total room size is 14.5ft x 18.5ft but after I close the stairwell and create a small closet it will be 11.5 x 18.5.

View of the back of the room. As you can see I will still have to deal with the washer/dryer and treadmill. I've been thinking of moving the back speaker up and creating a closet around the w&d.<br/>

Here is the front of the rack. I built this into the wall of the utility room. Used 3/4in plywood for the shelves. I wanted to make sure it would hold the MPS-1.<br/>

And the back. I tried to keep everything neat.<br/>

This is a shot of the speaker selector and intellipad I installed to run the whole house system. I am using the zone 2 of the Pioneer and 2 of the MPS-1 channels.<br/>

I'm open to any suggestions for room treatments and such. I am planning on upgrading my sub next and then finishing the rest of the room.

Very, very cool! Stuff like this gets me inspired (for about four seconds) to do something similar, but then my laziness sets in.

That is one nice set-up with the TV and speakers on the front wall and the component rack flush with the wall. I like the whole house audio, too. I agree, it might be good to enclose the washer and dryer.

Thanks Adam I appriciate it. I am as lazy as the next guy I just have a Scottish wife who keeps me on task. I also had the inspiration of the MPS-1 sitting in a box with no place to live until the rack was built.

I love the picture of the back of the rack (that's always one of the best views of any home theater, IMO), good cable management.

Regarding room treatments, this may be a good read as far as bass is concerned (page 25 in particular, since you are considering building a wall to hide the washer and dryer).

the front part of the room is very neat ... the pipes and tubes in the rear part is a bit distracting, but hey, the important part is the front, right?

Yeah it is still rough back there. I am going to box all that in when the ceiling is put in.

Thanks to all for the comments on the rack. Being able to not have a rack next to the speakers on the wall opened things up from a space stand point and really helped with the look.

I don't know if it'll make much of a difference but you could also seperate the cables coming out of the back of your equipment into different groups like power and speaker cable or pre-processed etc.

Thanks. I did do that to a certain extent. On the amp and the power center the power cables are routed away from source & speaker wires cables. I've heard differing opinions of whether that actually makes any difference sound wise but with those two it was not really any extra work.

Me too it’s all as well if you’ve got the space to knock a hole in the wall for a flush fine finish well done.

Oh one more thing a few pc fans placed behind it with a voltage regulator to blow some cool air around some parts that get too warm well rest you’re mind of the worries of over heating.

I am looking at a Klipsch on wall system for a buddy of mine but his budget really limits him to the Quintet SL package. Did you compare the two and do you think my buddy would notice a big difference in sound quality?

Thanks again to all for the complements! It is great to get complements after all the work and from people who have such nice systems themselves. Still so much to be done before I can actually call it a day. I will be starting on the ceiling in the next few days. Wife crushed the sub first ceiling second idea.

I only looked at the Synergy SLX vs. the RVX series. I did not get to listen to them in the same type of room (bb vs. my local ref dealer) and I went with the reference series. They felt like a better built unit and sounded less harsh (again could have been the room) and the reference series look much better.

At that time my theater was in the living room and I could not have towers. Now I wish I would have waited. Not that these are bad speakers, I just think they do have limitations in the lower frequencies and I am hoping a better sub would make a difference.
