The Subwoofer that will NOT turn off

I got a JBL Venue 12 sub about a month ago. One of the features says that after 10 min of no signal from the amp, the sub will automotically go on standby mode, however, long after the amp has been turned off, the sub is still on! Can someone please give me some possible ways to fix this- or is it okay that the sub is for days on end even though the amp is off?

There should be a level adjustment on the sub. I think you need to turn it up a bit and see what happens. If that doesn't work, turn it down some. Right now it is set too sensitive and thinks it is getting a signal.

Thanks for the fast response. I'll try that tonight and see what happens in the morning.

boboi, does the led light change color?

When the sub is on, the light will be green, and when it's supposed to go on standby, it's supposed to turn red- in my case, the light always stays green unless I manually turn the unit off and back on again, then the sub will enter it's standby mode.

Boboi, do you mean the sub is humming?
the sub is not humming as far as I can tell. Unless you mean a really low and faint drone emitting from the sub when it's still on long after the amp is turned off. Though, this can only be heard if you put your ear right next to the sub. Could the problem be with the amp I'm using? I'm using a HK AVR145.

I turned my sub up a little last night, and as of this morning, it's still on! I'll turn it down and see if that remedy's the problem. Do you think it has anything to do with the fact that the amp is only on standby and not totally powered off?

The amp being on shouldn't be enough to turn your sub on. It should only turn on when it sees a music signal from your source. I had the opposite problem with one of my old subs. It didn't want to turn on unless there was something really loud happening.

I would second you turning down the sensitivity of the sub. Turning it up is going to have the opposite effect that you want. Try turning the sub all the way off and then put it back into standby mode. Turn the sensitivity of the sub down as low as it will go and playing some music or a movie at a normal listening level for you. Keep turning the knob up until the sub finally turns on. That should be the correct setting for you.

That is a very good plan, but don't forget that you need to then adjust the receiver appropriately to get the correct calibration level once you have adjusted the sub's level. I would contact JBL and see what they say about the issue as well since it could be a defective amp. One other thing to check, what happens if you unplug the signal cable from it? If it still doesn't shut off, something is wrong with the sub's amp.

with the amp off, I have unplugged the sub woofer cable and I get a really loud buzz, I am assuming that means the sub's amp is still on? Thanks for the feedback, I was planning on calling JBL to see what they had to say about that.

There shouldn't be any hum with the source disconnected. It is seeing that as signal and that is probably what is keeping it on.

When you unplugged the cable did you touch the end of it? That will cause it to hum or buzz, at least with mine it does. When you do have it plugged into the amp make sure the cable is not rubbing on any other cables. It may be getting feedback from that.

Yes, subs will hum when you touch the input and when you remove the plug, but once all that is done, it shouldn't make any noise. If it only did that when you unplugged the cable, that is normal.

When I unplugged the sub cable from th eback of the sub, I simply pull it out and I get a loud hum. I didn't make any contact with the end of it. I'm thinking it might be a feedback problem as well, I'll rearrange the wires and see how that fares. Thanks for the feedback!

Oh, yes, it will not go off unless you turn the power switch off. So, it will be on standby when not in use. I interpreted your post differently a bit.

My apologies if my post was a bit vague. Here's what's going on: my sub supposedly has the function of going on standby after 10 minutes when it receives no signal from the amp. My amp, however, is never fully off, but is on standby when not in use. Must I manually turn off the amp in order for the sub to enter it's standyby mode?

No you should not have to turn your receiver completely off. Can you actually turn off your receiver? Mine, switching the button only toggles between on and stand by, but my integrated I can actually turn off completely with the power switch. The sub should turn off (after the amount of time) when it receives no signal, and if your receiver is on stand-by, there should be no signal coming from it.

Yes I can actually turn the reciever off by manually pushing the power button on the receiver. It's strange only because when I first got the sub, it would go on stanby after 10 minutes of no signal, but it hasn't been doing so for the past couple of weeks. In order to make the sub go on standby, I manually power the sub on then off again, very annoying since I like to use my sound system a good 3-5 times per day. The JBL sub10 actually has an 'auto' switch on the back of it that allows it to do the same thing- after 10 minutes of no signal, it goes on standby and fires back up when a signal is present. The sub12, the one I have, only has an on switch, but is supposed to do the same, according to the instruction manual.
