The New HTIBs out there.

Hi people, I am a new member and this is my first post, so please, go easy on me. Listen, is there anyone out there that has first hand (or first ear) knowledge of Sony's DAV-LF1H DVD Platinum Dream System? This is one of their newest HTIBs and I haven't found any user ratings worth reading. I'm interested in this one in particular because it does offer 5.1 speakers, two of which are wireless and also because for $1,400 this box seems to pack some nice components. Is there any input that you can offer..., advice anyone?

I have heard it in display. It sounds OK, but not as good as seperates. As for the conveniance, you may find the IR rear surrounds annoying, because if the transmiter IR or receiver IR get's blocked the sound cuts out.

Thanks for the quick reply Seth. This system comes with a repeater which can be placed up high above the set to serve as a secondary IR trasmitter to prevent people traffic from blocking the signal. I also agree that separates is the audiophile way to go, but not being a serious one myself, I just want to find something that will sound good, that will have a certain degree of flexibility with my TV and my music, that looks good and that it doesn't cost as much as separate components will.

Has anyone else heard this thing?

Have you considered getting in-wall speakers with receiver?

I am not trying to completely vere you away from your choice, just proposing options you might not thought of. You could have a very elegant sound system with in wall speakers or small satelites (less obstructive than the Sony even) that would offer better sound quality for the same price.

I can go into more detail if you would like, if not I understand.

I don't mind at all if you get into more details, on the contrary. I'd be more than glad if you can recommend certain components that can still stay within my budget. One thing I do not wish to do is to buy any refurbished equipment, so please keep that in mind. Regarding in-wall speakers, seems out of the question..., both walls are cinder-block behind the sheet rock, there is only about 1-1/2" before hitting the concrete.

For a receiver I would recommend the Yamaha RX-V659. I will get back to the speakers later. Good night.

The AVS Forums have a dedicate HTIB forum. You would be more likely to find out what's good and what's not over there. That being said, you might stick around here and decide you can get more for your money buying separate components. Certainly check out the AVS forum, because you may learn that the Sony system will work perfectly for your wants and needs.

Seth, the Yamaha RX-V659 has no HDMI connections at all. Any other suggestions?

Speaker system

Abe,
Maybe you can clarify the requirements for your system including listening preferences and room size. We have an idea of your budget, $1400.

For <$1000 you can get a quality 5.1 bookshelf speaker system and add a receiver and upscalling DVD player. You don't need HDMI on the receiver, but models that include this feature (Yamaha HTR-5990) start in the $500 range.

I had the Sony you are talking about or it may have been one model down. It served as my set-up for a few months and was quickly replaced. The wireless speakers worked well but actually make you use more wires than a wired set up.

I am backed up with meetings right now but would be glad to talk more about it tomorrow.

You can get much better for close to the same price.
