I saw this as a preview on something else I recently watched and thought it looked funny so I Netflixed it. Though a fan of soccer (I played for a number of years), I don't follow English football. This movie is not so much about the football aspect though...it is about the personal rivalry between two of the most famous coaches in English football.
I had never heard of either of them nor thier rivalry, but I found it both interesting (based on a true story) and funny. Don Revie was coach of the Division 1 champs Leeds United and Brian Clough (sounds like cough) was coach of Derby who were at the bottom of division 2. When Derby plays Leeds, Clough is excited because it is the biggest game in many years for them and would bring a lot of publicity to their team and town. Leeds is noted for having "inappropriate" conduct and as a result of a rather dirty game, they win over Derby. When the coaches walk out, Revie doesn't shake Clough's hand and Clough sees this as a public "dismissal" and this triggers a long running personal vendetta against Revie. Clough proceeds to acquire a good team and go after winning the Euro Cup, something that Leeds has failed to do despite being top of the division for years.
I felt it was well acted and quite funny. Don't expect a lot of soccer though, as this is about the coaches, not the teams. Recommended rental.
Michael Parkinson: How do you react when someone says, "Boss, you're doing it wrong?"
Brian Clough: Well, I ask him how *he* thinks it ought to be done. And then we get down to it, and we talk about it for twenty minutes, and then we decide that I was right.
Muhammed Ali: [Clough, Taylor & their families watch Muhammed Ali on television] Some fella in London, England named, some Brian... Brian Clough. I heard all the way in America that this fella talks too much. They say he's another Mohammed Ali. There's just one Mohammed Ali. Now, Clough, I've had enough. Stop it.
Peter Taylor: Are you gonna stop it?
Brian Clough: No, I'm going to fight him.
