To the OP I looked in your local craigslist and there are all kinds of speakers there for 200 bucks. Did the 8's get sold?

Klipsch

I have Klipsch RB5 bookshelves ( similar to present RB51), Polk RTi35s and Kef IQ3s (recent models)n and Boston Cr8s which are a similar sized bookshelf units. Quite frankly, the Klipsch are much better for HT and surprisingly much better with music. Much nonsense has been spread about the "horn harshness" factor with regard to Klipsch. The present designs have vestigial horns which bear little resemblance to the deep metallic horns of yesteryear.....the present horns are less than one inch deep....the increase efficiency of these designs for HT overcomes any response anomalies they may have.....I would however stick to the Reference series.....my chief present complaint with Klipsch and the rest is the cheap looking construction and cosmetics...of the mentioned models I would rate the Kefs as the worst along with the Bostons.....the Polks are a distant 2nd to the Klipsch models....

Gamecock...these Polks are listed on audiogon and ebay if you want em. They're brand new, been sitting in the garage for years. Im doing a favor my cousin who bought em when good guys went under but never bought a receiver for it so now doesn't want it anymore so Im listing it for him. Soundwise, plays real loud and smooth > good efficiency with 91db for the motley crue and quite riot tunes.

You might want to check out his place. They run specials quite frequently and sell "good stuff". Their return policy is gracious and in many cases shipping is free.

Good replacement sub for a tight budget

i'm looking for an overall decent sounding speaker for music and ht. my choices are polk rta 8t, klipsch sf1, klipsch KG 3.5, and polk r50. i listen to mostly metal, and for movies it's horror, action, and war. this system is going into a small/medium bedroom. for power i have a yamaha htr-5890 7ch. my sub is mediocre... a sorry kennwood 100 watt 8". i plan on getting a better one soon. for the 4 speakers mentioned above, please let me know which would be best for me. please do not give me anyother suggestion for different speakers. i'm on a tight budget. all of the speakers are listed off craigs list. thanx
OP here is a good inexpensive subwoofer: Dayton SUB-120HT $139.90
free shipping http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-635

Is your speaker budget around $200 for used speakers? That is okay just trying to review the Polk and Klipsch speakers you are looking at?

Here are your Klipsch 3.5s at $225 http://rmn.craigslist.org/ele/900800864.html But depending on where you are located shipping costs might kill the deal.

Here are the PolkR50s new from ebay for $229.90 with free shipping.

I think I like either the Klipsch 3.5s or the new Polk R50s.

You can also get the Polk R50s from Fry's for $199.99 http://shop2.frys.com/product/4005092

Good Luck

I personally have a pair of Athena LS-500 speakers, you can get them from audioadvisor via the amazon store HERE, click on "3 new and used" on the right and you will see audioadvisor at 149.99 each and free shipping.

The only problem with these is finding other Athena LS series speakers is damn near impossible such as the matching center and bookshelves. Energy makes a C-series of speaker which uses the same components and will match sonically but they look different (gray mounting flanges and square boxes, not curved like the towers).

I wish you luck in finding that elusive bang for the buck!

From a SQ point-of-view, the Athena's get my vote. The bass extension will be lacking, but they are the best choice. Period.

Good job malovich.

GET THEM

for some odd reason the bic towers purchase didn't go through... you think i should get Athena LS-500"s instead? they look pretty good but i'm kinda concerned with output and midbass.... kick drum and low drop tune guitar riffs

With your budget you have to expect that you'll have to make some compromises. These are better than most and, for the price, are hard to beat. You can always add a subwoofer in the future if you want to plumb the ultimate depths. If HT is your ultimate goal, I'd be more concerned about finding a matching center.
