Many receiver ratings will be inflated when you consider a channels driven at the same time, while amps will be able to hit their printed specs much more often.

REceivers sound different due to other decoding chips, DACs, and other factors. You should really listen to several recievers before you buy to hear the one that sounds best to you.

Amp vs. receiver

Almost all amps are stable into 4 ohms, while most receivers are designed for a 6-8 ohm impedance.
