Technics SA-DX1040 issues - optical audio from CATV

OK all, I'm new posting here, so please excuse if I was unable to find an answer to this in a search.

I have a Technics SA-DX1040 receiver that I am using for home theater. If it helps, I finally found an online manual here

Here's the dilemma:

I finally got a DVR box from my new cable provider - Verizon. It's a Motorola QIP6416 HD/DVR and has optical audio out. I always had the audio set up on just left and right audio as previous boxes didn't have optical audio out. Unfortunately my receiver doesn't have composite digital audio in.

I hooked up the optical cable from the DVR to the TV port on the receiver and nothing. I tried moving it to the CD port and nothing. Put it in the DVD port and viola! It worked. I do know for sure that the CD port is functional as my CD player works fine as does my Apple Airport Express in that port.

I do want to keep my DVD hooked up with digital audio, so I purchased an Impact Acoustics 3-play switch to swap between devices. Unfortunately I hadn't tested the connection from the DVR first. I have noticed that whenever I change the channel on the DVR and sometimes going to commercials, it loses the digital signal until I go press the digital button on the receiver again. This especially sucks since I lost the remote (actually dog ate it several years ago as a puppy). This happens wether it is connected through the switch or direct from the DVR.

Any thoughts on anything to test or is this monster not worth fighting with? I'd love to just get a newer receiver but the other projects in the house at the moment have sucked the wallet dry.

Help please before I throw this ******* thing through the wall!!!!

Hi Jeff,

first of all, welcome to the forum!

Secondly, I'd suggest you to re-direct this thread to the appropriate place; I mean, RECEIVERS, PROS & AMPS, where you'll get much more feedback.

Well, before you throw your receiver into the wall, I would suggest you to read both manuals (AVR + DVR).

It sounds like an ASSIGNMENT issue. Most probably, your AVR must have a digital assignment that you can play with. In other words, that means you can determine to which component you want to have the digital link on.
It could be CD, DVD, DVD, etc...

Also check the audio/video settings on your DVR, as it could be set to analog rather than digital. Hope this helps.

Keep us posted and good luck!

Cheers / Avliner.

Is there a reason why you don't just leave it connected to the TV or CD input? I agree, it is probalby just that you need to go into the digital assignment menu in the receiver and assign digital to whichever input you want to use for the cable box, though I don't see anything listed in the manual about assigning digital inputs. The manual specifically shows a cable/sat box connected to the TV input via optical, so this is the way I would expect to be setting it up. I would definitely try connecting the box directly to the receiver and see if you still have the same problem, because if the problem goes away it may have something to do with the switch not the receiver.
