the receiver has a signal strengh meter it will get up to two out of three bars and you can listen fine then it will randomly cut out and stop playing any station it like a ghost in the machine

In that case unless you are a service tech, or knowledgeable with good test equipment, you are out of luck. I doubt it is going to be cost effective to pay to have it serviced.
