Hi & welcome to Audioholics.

Can you buy something else? Even if that Technics receiver was free?

You can buy a much better receiver for very cheap (used or refurb) by one of the major Japanese companies, like Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, Onkyo and Pioneer. Just stay with one of these five major manufacturers.

* Besides, Technics is similar to Fisher Price, and 1987 is 22 years ago!

If it is for two channel audio only in a modest set up then fine. If it is for A/V use, I would move on.

It is a Stereo receiver.

* One is on E-bay right now for $18.
Are yes, I remember those. They were a terrible piece of junk right out of the box. Those slider controls got noisy right away and crackled and became intermittent. There will be no replacement now. The OP should definitely avoid that one. If he wants a stereo vintage receiver he can do a lot better.

Thanks for the link, Bob.

That was a low end unit for Technics.
If it still sounds clean and can get it for nothing or close, it may be worth it just to put sound in a room for cheap, but don't confuse it with high quality vintage electronics. Frankly, with the sliders I'd bet the controls are very noisy!
If you check this link, it was the least expensive unit in the list!

Technics did make some decent stuff. I have an integrated amp I bought in 1982 that is still working fine in my garage system. I think the fact that it still works like new after 27 years (I cleaned the pots once) says something for the build quality. However, it was never my "favored" amp.
I suspect Bob may be right that Technics may have fallen to Fisher-Price later-on, but they were competitive with their high end in the late 70's and early 80's.
My amp was mid-level and rated at 60W RMS X 2 from 20Hz to 20kHz at .005% distortion. I don't know if it still does that, but it will still crank without any sign of distress.
Even the cheesy FL power meters still work like new!

I bought several much better receivers at my Salvation Army store for less than that. About $10 to $15. State-of-the-art vintage stereo receivers, the full true stuff.
GoodWill stores, Thrift Stores, garage sales, places like that will get you a nice stereo receiver (Kenwood, Pioneer, Yamaha, etc.) for less than $20.
And mucho better than Technics. :)

* Teac makes reasonable separates.

You did well.

I don't know that receiver personally, but Hitachi made pretty solid stuff. It wasn't much for looks and they really didn't market too heavily, but what they did make was quite good and generally well under-rated.

It's not recommended. Your output will be decreased significantly. I've never enjoyed the sound of 2 pair of stereo speakers operating at once anyway, since it sounds terrible. Just use the best pair of speakers you have. Once you get an actual surround receiver you can then find a use for your second pair of speakers.

I know, that's got to be the most painful thing in the world right?
You got that one right. ;)

It probably has inadequate signal strength. When the signal drops below a certain threshold the muting circuits cut in. Good FM is best with a roof antenna. Your solution is almost certainly a better antenna.
