I just got off the phone with yamaha, he told me with using a playstation3 for a blu ray it won't show in the display on the 6180 trueHD you have to trust that its decoding the signal right and it should just say PCM. I also told him some dvd's I have to have the vol. at -9 he said this would not hurt the unit. I just wondered if Iam underpowered.

If the player or in your case the PS3 is doing the decoding then it is correct that the receiver will only display PCM. The lights only go on when the receiver is doing the decoding. For this to happen the player needs the ability to bitstream the HD audio. I don't think the PS3 can do this. (not sure)

PS3 cannot pass bitstream as the hdmi chip inside it lacks the capability. But who cares when the PS3 can decode TrueHD and DTS-HD/MA via PCM anyway.

There's a very simple way to check what the PS3 is decoding by hitting the "select" button to bring the Bitrate meter.

Not necessarily since other DVDs you seem to have it lower than -9.
It is the way the audio is encoded to the different DVDs

If the sound can be as loud as you ever want it, and if it is undistorted at those high volumes, and if the unit does not shut down/go into protection mode, you probably have all the power you need. If you want more precise advice on this, you will need to tell us more details, such as what speakers you have, and how loud you want to play things.

The reason the receiver does not show TrueHD is because it is not receiving TrueHD. If you have things set up properly, your Playstation 3 is decoding TrueHD and converting it to multichannel PCM and sending that via HDMI to your receiver. So, your receiver should be displaying that it is getting a multichannel PCM signal. There is no loss in sound quality doing things that way, so do not worry about this.

I believe the Playstation 3 cannot output TrueHD directly, so that is why it should be set to decode TrueHD and output it as PCM.

the speakers Iam using are soundstage 800p they have a integrated amp.200 watts. max power 300watts. so if I go into the dvd setting on the PS3 what boxs should be checked off? everything is connected with HDMI cables.

The Panasonic BD30 can pass bitstream. In fact all it can do is pass bitstream and not decode anything. The new BD50 will be able to pass bitstream and decode everything internally as well.
