I just got off the phone with yamaha, he told me with using a playstation3 for a blu ray it won't show in the display on the 6180 trueHD you have to trust that its decoding the signal right and it should just say PCM. I also told him some dvd's I have to have the vol. at -9 he said this would not hurt the unit. I just wondered if Iam underpowered.
If the sound can be as loud as you ever want it, and if it is undistorted at those high volumes, and if the unit does not shut down/go into protection mode, you probably have all the power you need. If you want more precise advice on this, you will need to tell us more details, such as what speakers you have, and how loud you want to play things.
The reason the receiver does not show TrueHD is because it is not receiving TrueHD. If you have things set up properly, your Playstation 3 is decoding TrueHD and converting it to multichannel PCM and sending that via HDMI to your receiver. So, your receiver should be displaying that it is getting a multichannel PCM signal.
There is no loss in sound quality doing things that way, so do not worry about this.
I believe the Playstation 3 cannot output TrueHD directly, so that is why it should be set to decode TrueHD and output it as PCM.
