I am in the middle of building a table tuba from plans i recieved from bill fitzmaurice loudspeaker design.
has anyone ever made one???
It is a folded horn design that from the sound of it will go low and at a decent amoumt of spl.

from what i read here there seems to be alot of people thinking that you need to buy 800 dollar powered subs to have good sound.

I have been cutting mdf into boxes and filling them with all sorts of drivers producing some really good sound for about 20% of retail speakers.

Just today i recieved a box of cerwin vega drivers and made there center channel .
It sounds just like my cousins cerwin vega center as the drivers were the same .
only thing was i paid $25 plus shipping for the drivers and about 6 bucks for wood.
with my a / b switch and spectrum analizer and 6 sets of ears they are the same.

Read the site a bit more and you'll see DIY subs are often recommended.

I have been.
but like most forums it gets a little crowded after a while.
I searched tuba , tabletuba. table tuba , then sub.
all i got was questions about is a bla bla bla better than a bla bla bla.

is there a area just for builders??

Well, some drivers cost more than $25 OEM, and some cabinets contain much more than just $6 of wood. Subwoofer acoustic theory (i.e. laws of physics) will explain why what you built for around $31 would not produce as good a sound as something else.

There is a DIY section on this forum lower down in the list. And there's also a DIY section on AVS Forum.

My center channel that was tested just last night was made for about $50 and sounds just like the one i made a copy of .
the cerwin vega store bought unit sold for $325.
In this case i was able to find all the same drivers at a stupid low price and thought i would just try it.
the x over was also the same.
yes i agree that 6 bucks dont build much .
my tuba is looking at around 2 sheets of 3/4 mdf

I sold home audio for 7 years and saw alot of crap there too.

Look further down the list for the DIY forum. You should find plenty there. I also seem to recall a thread recently started by Mulester about some crazy DIY sub he's working on.
