I have slowly been upgrading the audio system, and I am proud to say it's almost completed. This time next week two more pieces will have arrived. The system will now consist the following...
Marantz SR5005 receiver - Factory Refurbished
Denon DNP-720AE network audio player - Open Box
1 Pair Ascend Acoustics CMT-340SE speakers - New
2 Emotiva USP-1 mono block amps - Used
Emotiva USP-1 preamp with phono inputs - Used
I am also proud to say that all components, except the speakers, were bought used. There was a time in my life where buying used was not an option. I would hate to think how much I would've spent if I bought these new.
The last component to be added will be a turntable, which is where my dilemma comes into to play. The decision I am facing is do I buy a new Rega RP1, or do I buy a vintage turntable. Three I'm thinking about are Technics, Thorens, and AR. If I go new, the Rega RP1 is the only one I would consider due to financial reasons and personal preference. However, if I go vintage the options are endless. Technics, Thorens, and AR are the ones I have read about the most. If there are others, please post and explain your reason why you would choose that particular table.
So, my dilemma is this... I am loooking for a turntable that will best complement the other components in producing the best quality of sound. Sound quality is number one priority and a must have. Next priority would be ease of use. After a hard day at work, the last thing thing I need is operating a complicated turntable when I want to listen to vinyl. Going manual would be the best way to go with the least functions that could fail. However, an automatic or semi automatic would be feasible as we get older. Having a wood base/plinth would be the most pleasing to the eye that perceives warmth, where those whose base/plinth is metal that perceives cold.
For financial reasons, the turntable must use a moving magnet cartridge.
Genre of music... Smooth Jazz, Blues, Soft Rock, with a touch of Bluegrass and Classical.
Budget... Going new or vintage can be had for $600 or less.
It is now open to advice/thoughts/recommendations from you members of Audioholics. When you recommend a table, please give your reason(s) why you chose that particular table.
