System Connection Question

Good Morning all, I have a question regarding the audio connections of my system. I would like to watch regular television without having to fire up the entire system, but still be able to have the display wired and ready to go when its time for movies, sports, etc.

I am thinking that I can hook up the directv receiver and the Blu Ray player directly to the t.v., via HDMI, and then use an audio-out from the t.v. to an auxilary on the processor. In theory, I think I will get whatever is coming from either source, whether it be Dolby Digital, etc. Will this work, or will performance suffer?

PS: the Blu Ray player (Pioneer) already decodes the various soundfields presented by the disc).

Thanks in advance for your responses.

If you hook the Sat box and PS3 directly to HDMI, you have the ability to just use the TV speakers at that point, a simple opt cable from the Sat box to the AVR will the suffice for times where you want to listen to the TV through your system.

A/V connections

Connect the BluRay through the receiver via HDMI to take advantage of the new audio formats. The cable/sat boax (and other sources you want to watch without the HT) should have HDMI or video and Audio connections directly to the TV. The TV should have a digital audio output which you can connect to the receiver so you can watch a satelite movie with the HT if necessary.

The only issue here is that most TV's wont pass through the digital format... IE, from DVD player or Cable box, the TV wont send a dolby digital signal to the receiver. At least mine wont...

If you don't have a new receiver that does processing of the HDMI signal for sound, then hook both sources to the HDMI inputs iin the television. If your TV does not have a digital audio output, connect the digital sound outputs from the sources directly to the receiver. That way you will get traditional Dolby 5.1, 7.1 etc. to your receiver for surround sound. I don't have HDMI connections in my receiver nor a digital output from my TV so this is the way I have it hooked up. You just have to use the remote to switch your receiver from one source input to the other. I use digital optical (toslink) connectors which are common (i.e. PS3) but there are a few digital cable connectors on some equipment.

TV to receiver

I only use my TV with an OTA antenna. Whether the station is Digital or Analog, the digital output from the TV sends the signal to the receiver. Some major broadcasts even have Dolby Digital.

To cover your bases, run a digital (optical or coax) and an analog audio cable (red/white RCA) from the TV output to the receiver input.
