SVS subwoofer selection advice

I am in the process of upgrading my subwoofer. I am leaning toward a SVS subwoofer, but I am unsure which model, PB-12 plus/2, PC-ultra or PC-plus.

I am looking for a sub that does home theater well but can also handle music. My room size is 14'x17' with 8' ceilings.

I like the PB-12 plus/2 but the weight is a concern (a couple of back surgeries). But if that is the sub that going to give the best low end then I will work around the weight issue.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!!
Rick

Which looks better, cylinder or box?

Box: consider the PB12-ISD/Plus
Cylinder: consider a PCi/Plus 20-39

I highly doubt you'll need a 2-driver sub for a room that small. I'm personally using a single cylinder in a much larger room and still don't push the sub to its limits.

Which driver? The isd's offer the best bang for your buck. Get a Plus if you think you might need 3 extra db's of headroom, and if price is no object and/or your buying a sub to go with your $15,000 loudspeakers; get an Ultra.

Yeah, that is a small room. I don't know about SVS but from what I gather, Hsu subs are more musical. But then again, I don't own either brand, and that may very well just be hype. I did do a little research on drivers though, and the Ultra driver is an underhung design which equates to lower distortion as compared to an overhang design. I wish I could find out more info on the driver in the Hsu TN series because that is supposed to be a reputable driver as well. But as Ninja said, as far as SVS is concerned, the ISD driver may very well be the better bang for the buck of all their other drivers.

Hi Rick,

I think you'll be happy with either an HSU or SVS. If I were you, I'd contact SVS and tell them your room dimensions/specifics.

They'll recommend the sub that's right for you, and won't oversell you.

Good luck and enjoy the sub! (Whichever one you get) ;)

Or contact Dr Hsu (by phone or e mail) at www.hsuresearch.com

Dr Hsu is very well respected by most in the Audio world for producing very accurate/musical subs so you know that they will also perform extremely well with movies. m2c

Any one will do very well. They are musical, not to worry. The sub doesn't know music from a movie sound track.
If weight is a problem moving it, use a hand cart to position?

I'd check with Tom V if you're looking at SVS- he's one of the owners, and is a member here at AH. He's also good about answering emails, so drop him a line.
