Will this work or just a bad idea? I could understand why it would and why it would not. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks for any replies.

Well,

This isn't a dumb idea. I just emailed SVS and apparently others are doing this same thing. Anyone out there with this set up? I would sure like some input before I buy.

Thanks,

I did try a search but nothing pertinent came up.

SVS did this themselves that CES(Consumer Electronics Show). E-mail them about it.

I would imagine you would need a stronger center channel speaker if you use the center as mains. In other words, I don't think three centers will blend as well as the original setup because the center channel would end up being over-powered.

I don't really understand your statement there. I use three center channels as my mains and I don't see how the center is being over powered. I think they blend wonderfully.

Not if you set your system up correctly use a set-up disc, such as Avia, and a sound meter. Everyone should do this no matter what speakers to adjust their system to thier room's acoustics.

Spend enough time around audio equipment and you will realize that more power is never a bad thing. In fact usually smaller speakers have a lower sensitivity which requires more power to achieve a desired loudness when compared to a larger more sensitive speaker but the maximum loudness you can obtain will usually be lower with a smaller speaker system though. You will generally run into more problems when trying to drive a speaker to a very loud volume with too little power.

I personally wouldn't use center channels all around because I like big sound equipment :D but I don't see any problems with doing this besides the issue I've heard a little about concerning the placement of 2 mid-range's surrounding the tweeter. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and could clarify, it would be appreciated because I know nothing about it but remember reading a bit about it a while back.

Then I stand corrected. :)

Oh, I just noticed why my statement was confusing. I didn't mean that the center channel would have too much power going to it, but instead that by using more powerful speakers as mains the center channel would get a little washed out. However, I suppose that as long as the system is calibrated correctly it wouldn't be a problem. ...Forgot about that!

SVS offers a package with SCS all around if you like - 5.0 and 7.0 right on the site.

The SVS center is designed specifically to reduce horizontal off axis lobing which is why the tweeter is placed towards the top of the cabinet and the drivers are more closely spaced. I would caution using this speaker in a vertical configuration as it is not the typical D'Appolito driver topology that works very well vertically.

The SCS I heard was actually the best speaker of the package, though I wouldn't have been able to try it out in a vertical orientation because it was the system of someone who was nice enough to let me come hear them (and he only had 1 SCS...)

According to SVS for the Center speakers to be used as mains they actually relocate the tweeter and the SVS badge so everything lines up like a normal vertical speaker.

Well that would involve a different front baffle and likely model# (which I don't see on their site), so buyers should be mindful when decided to buy this version if used as main channels oriented vertically.

I'd swear Ron told me at CES that all they did was turn the tweeter 90 degrees for proper dispersion.

The SVS Site does list the vertical centers as a model MTM. This is in the NEWS section. I don't remember any details, however, regarding tweeter placement, bracing, etc.
