SVS PB12+ or AV123 MFW-15?

Gosh, I keep going back and forth on which sub to buy!

I am building a new HT room, on the small side (12 X 18 X 8). I just bought a Rocket system with 760's, Bigfoot and dipoles. Now I need a sub. I don't need, nor want a crack-the-sheetrock sub, but I do want a good one.

The MFW-15 may be available in a couple of months. The PB12+ in rosewood is currently in limited supply, so I need to decide which one to purchase pretty soon.

I will admit that while both subs look really great, I am more drawn to the looks of the SVS. The SVS is approximately $450 more than the MFW-15. While that is a consideration, it is not an over-riding factor.

Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Mike

It really depends on how much you want to spend. The two subs you mention have different competitors in their price ranges. There's a big jump between a $600 sub and a $1000 sub.

If you have a grand to spend, my personal opinion is you can't do better than the Hsu VTF-HO w/Turbo. You can also get a PB12-Plus from SVS, a 12" Rocket from AVS, or a pair of 10" Rockets.

For $600, your options are a little more limited, but you can get a Hsu VTF3-MK3, SVS PB-10, or 10" Rocket. Or a pair of X-subs. Or the aforementioned MFW15.

You could also pick up a used Ultra on audiogon as people are dumping them now that the new ultras are coming out.

While that is true pricewise, I dont think there will be much in the $600 range that will have the output or depth of the MFW. According to its designer, 2 of them will be near the JL F113 in output.

Of course, it is all speculation at this point, but the few people who have heard it were both impressed with its musicality and output...so it might be worth the wait.

I have 2 on order.

In a room your size you may be able to go a lot lower in price than you expect to get good output.

I am able to get 116 dB in room with my X-sub in a similar sized room but it doesnt really go low enough for HT.

Maybe a VTF-2 would do you even.

Just my opinion...

Seaton doesn't do much speculating. You can take what he says to the bank.

He's just tweaking at this point, so the final outcome isn't going to be far from anything he's already said, IMHO.

He knows I'm not much of a ported sub fan, so he's heard my rants about that, but based on our conversations over the course of the MFW-15's development, I feel safe in recommending that this one is money well spent.

Size, shape, industrial design and...price, make it a no-brainer.

...just my opinion.;)

Give or take a meter (probably closer to 3') at about 40hz.

This was with music not tones.

Oh and Bosso, I dont doubt Seaton, but until it is released and in peoples hands I generalize it as speculation because we dont even know if what he is playing with will be the final product...that is all...no doubt of the man at all.

Ironmike, I'm not sure which part you are referring to, but the answer is the same for both statements....correspondence from guys at both shops.

They were on but just for you I turned them off and played Beastie Boys Check it out at -15 on my yammie with about 1/2 gain on sub and still got 114dB at an even greater distance, probably actually a meter.

Camera is in transit from Sony so no photo.

Thanks.....very interesting.

Have you check to see what kind of extension you get in your room?

It is good to 30, not much below that as far as I know.

Probably Thursday I can make it home before the wife and kid to do some serious testing, right now I can only speculate, but I know the curve is pretty steep between serious output and crapped out.

The MFW-15 looks very appealing to me. I can't wait for it to come out.:D

$1k sub

If you are willing to spend $1k, two of the MFW-15s will definatley have more output then a single SVS 12" plus sub. Word on forum is that the MFW-15 will be packaged priced 2/$1k.

I preordered two MFW-15s with a 10% off gift card.....

My total came to $1043 shipped. Would have been $999 plus shipping ($150 or so) without it.

I havent been let down yet!

I was able to get home early so here are the X-sub measurements I recorded.

Data:
Single Onix X-Sub from AV123, corner firing in 18.5' x 14' room, open to hall in back, kitchen and foyer (2 story) on right side. Sub is in front right corner of room under the computer desk.

Measurements taken in the sweet spot approx. 10' diagonal from sub location.

Meter was held approx. chest level for ease of reading.

Tones 20hz-80hz played via PC from Rhapsody playing test section from Bass Mechanik Quad Maximus CD.

Level on Yamaha at -15dB, sub gain approx 11 o clock (just shy of half gain)

Note 80Hz is crossover point so most is probably X-LS

Apples to oranges.....

That's like trying to compare a ford festiva to a Dodge Charger. Ya know... because they dont even target the same customer.
