Svs Or Velodyne - Which One??

Hi folks,

back to the site, after quite a while!

Well I'm basically ready to pull the trigger by early next month on a new woofer, as I want to replace my JBL PB-12 (after 4 years).

According to my research, I've found the SVS PB10-ISD and the VELODYNE DPS-10 to be the best bets and basically under the same price tags (my third option would be HSU, though).

I had the chance to hear the VELO, but not the SVS, which is only sold on-line.
To my ears, the VELO puts my ol' JBL on shame; really no comparison at all...

Considering that everybody raves about SVS, I would ask how better it is (if applicable), when compared to the VELO??

Any comments, suggestions will be greately appreciated.

I would probably choose the SVS for the fact that it has a slightly more powerful amplifier and definitely goes lower. It has a -3dB point of 20Hz, while the Velo has a -3dB point of 28Hz. This is important for home theater applications where deep bass is needed. While I haven't heard the PB-10, the SVS product I have heard was definitely awesome and I thought worth every penny.

I hope some other members can chime in, but I'd really lean toward SVS. I personally feel that Velodyne doesn't really start to offer great values until you hit their higher up lines. In your budget class, SVS and Hsu (again, my opinion) are the kings.

I agree. The DPS series is great for a starter, but if you can afford better, do it.

How big is your room? The PB-10 is good to fairly large rooms but losses its shine in overly large ones.

The Only thing the DPS-10 will have on the SVS is WAF and Looks.

I would pretty much agree with jaxvon. Velo and SVS are different animals. I've owned the PB-10 and I found it equally at home with music as with movies and I have a large room. The DPS are accurate I'm sure, but I'd agree with jax that the depth will be more welcome when it comes to HT.

My room is not at all big; i.e., 20'L x 10'W x 9'H (1,800 cu.ft.).

I'm sure both woofers will be overkill for my needs; however I better consider the best option indeed.

Matter of fact, it seems that you're on an oval track, at Nascar Series, whenever you talk about woofers... the more you run and complete the laps, the more you see SVS & HSU all' round!!

I have no doubts they're both kings, but you know, it's not the same as if you can have a demo (as I had at CC, which, by the way, is not the proper place for that puropose...). Well, perhaps I better reconsider my options and choose between SVS & HSU; no problems at all!

Some other chimes / advices will be most welcome.

I tried out the DPS10 for nearly a month and thought it was the best sub I'd heard until the PB10 (and I had a few and heard more). The Velo is tuned higher, very musical and tight above 30hz, but getting down to 20hz clean is a huge difference. The Velo gets there but not clean. Depending on your room the Velo might hit harder. When listening to low content SVS will be clean and loud, the Velo will rumble.

So it depends on your listening habits.

I'd recommend the PB10 over the VTF-2 MK-2 in your room. The room doesn't seem big, but 20' is quite long, and 9' isn't a low ceiling. The PB10 isn't overkill at all. You can easily get away with the 12 or 12/V if your budget can handle it. There's really nothing like a sub reproducing 15Hz at audible levels.

Note that specify that they are kings...in a specific budget class. Once your budget goes over $1000 USD, there are many more subwoofers that you should consider and might be better for your needs. As far as your price range goes, I really can't find anything better than the PB-10ISD. As far as a demo goes, hearing it at CC has no bearing on what you'll hear in your own listening room. That's the beauty of SVS. You get to try it in your home. If you don't like it, you can send it back and get a refund. However, I doubt that would happen
