Surround sound

I have a Samsung smart tv along with a Sony 5.1 receiver and an Arris PVR through the Shaw cable company we subscribe with. I would like to hook up for surround sound, but am having connection problems. All units have HDMI. What is the proper hookup procedure to get some fine sound?

Hi! Does your Receiver and TV have an ARC HDMI? If so:
PVR-> TV-> Receiver

otherwise:

If you want to hear audio only with the receiver on:
-PVR -> Receiver-> TV

If you want to turn the receiver on separately, and then have to turn down the volume on the TV so only your surround speakers are playing:
-PVR-> TV-> TV's optical or HDMI out -> Receiver


A DVD player will simply go to the Receiver, and then you just change inputs.
