Hi
Just installed a Yamaha ysp 2200, I have the sky HD connected via optical cable and it's set up so picture is via HDMI and sound via optical
Some program's don't play in surround sound ( the light does not come on and there is a loss in sound quality, still good but not as good)
I check the program info and it says DD so should be in surround correct?
I have also checked the sky box is outputting via optical
Is this normal or am I doing something wrong

Welcome to the forum!

Based on your second post, it sounds to me that it might be how you set up your surround decoder setting. Dolby Surround might mean that it's a matrixed stereo encoding (like Dolby Pro-Logic), as opposed to Dolby Digital that has all of the channels encoded as discrete signals. The result is that your Yamaha will treat those signals differently. Have you played around with the surround decoder settings (mentioned on page 31 of the owner's manual, at least the U.S. version)?

As a note, Dolby Digital signals are not all surround sound. Dolby Digital is a way to encode the audio, and it can be from mono (1.0) up to 5.1 surround sound. Dolby Digital is the standard here in the U.S. for over-the-air television broadcasts, and some program material is stereo and some is in surround. For example, the public broadcasting stations in my area are all DD stereo. So, if you have some DD programs that play in stereo, don't worry. :)

Thanks for that, I have looked but nothing seems to help
Am I correct that if a sky program has DS (dolby surround) indicated on the program information the souround sound light should be on?
Decoder mode is set to auto
Surround decoder mode is on pro logic and I have tried pro logic 2

That's an excellent question regarding if the light should be on. From the manual, it seems like it would turn on for a Pro Logic signal, but I'm not certain. Also, it's possible that the audio signal that you're getting for the shows that you've tried so far are only in stereo. I haven't found information on the internet, yet, that says if DS for Sky HD means that it's always encoded for surround.

So, (1) it's possible that the Yamaha won't light up for Pro Logic, and/or (2) it's possible that the shows that you've tried so far are actually in stereo.

Do you have another component (like a DVD player) that you can connect to the Yamaha via optical? If you do, you might have some video (e.g. DVDs) that have a Pro Logic audio track, which would let you check if the light on the Yamaha comes on for Pro Logic material.

I waiting on a new player so can't check yet, might give sky a call and see if the know
Would have thought DS was in surround otherwise it would just be S for stereo but then again I have been wrong before
Keep you posted, thanks for replying its always good to bounce ideas of someone else

Ok just an update
After spending an hour talking to various numpties at sky who just read of menus to try and fix it I called Yamaha customer care
DS stands for Dolby stereo not Dolby surround as Sky told me
DD is Dolby digital but not always surround
So I'm trying to fix a problem that does not exist
