Sunfire, Velodyne or Pardigm Sub

OK, i think i've narrowed it down to three subs and now i need some input. All are in the same ball park as far as price, so before i kick down some dough, thought i would pick your brains. 1) Sunfire Solitaire 12; 2) Velodyne SPL1200 II; 3) Paradim Seismic 12. Room size is 13' x 17'(actually where the carpet ends, but opens into the kitchen and dining room) and ceilings are 8'. I chose these for their small size which is important for the WAF. If i'm missing a small but powerful sub that you think i should consider, i'm always open. I was considering the 10", but i think i have to go with the 12" for the room size and opening.

I personally prefer the Paradigm Seismic 12 over the Sunfire. It absolutely rocked a room at least 30% larger than yours. - At 1/2 volume :) . I have heard good things about the Velodyne SPL1200 II as well. Have you had the opportunity to audition all three side-by-side? I am upgrading to the Seismic in approx. 4 months myself..

I think you could. A quality 10" can do very nicely. I have the Velodyne HGS-10. My room is 16 x 29 (connected kitchen and living area). It (the sub) manages to fill the whole room with bass, especially at high volumes. I am actually considering an upgrade. PM me if you might be interested.

another choice is the b&w asw675. its compact and very nice looking. its not as powerful as the spl ( dont know the power of the others ). i really wanted the spl's before i bought my sub, because of all the rave reviews and because of its size. when i finally heard it i wasnt as impressed as i thought i would be. i pretty sure it was the placing of the subs, but that kinda leaned me away from it. :)

How about a pair that was just reviewed of the AV123? They should work nicely and are quite small. Also the cabinets according to the review on this site and from others have said of the VMPS cabinets Mark Schifter, owner of AV123, is building is that they are stunning or gorgeous. Thought I'd suggest it as it sounds as though it's your living room you need a sub in. I've never heard them but I got a feeling AV123 is putting the pressure on other companies and the quality will be difficult to match for the money.

The absolute best bang for anyone's buck is the RBH 1010. I have a couple of these with my T2's and they really are the best I've ever heard!

I have a couple for sale as well if anyone is interested, just contact me!

My room is very similar to yours, size-wise. Mine is about 22' wide 14' front to back, 8' ceiling, and opens to a staircase and 4' wide hallway that leads down about 15 feet. It's all finished drywall on metal studs and concrete block, with carpet over concrete floor.

I've got the Velodyne SPL-1200 II and am still breaking it in, but so far I am very very pleased with how this sub reaches down low and fills the room with bass. With the system calibrated with YPAO on my Yamaha RX-V2500 and the sub set at "2" - the Yamaha indicates -2.5 dB for the sub level. Naturally, I crank the sub up to about "4" to suit my bass-head requirements, and I have plenty of room for adjustment.

The fit and finish on the Velodyne is superb. I got the "black" one, but it's really a very dark shade of translucent blue over maple. You can see the wood grain through the finish, and it looks fabulous. The sub looks great with or without the grille - seeing that 2" cone excursion during heavy scenes is really cool. =)

For me, the deciding factor to go with the 12" over the 10" was to get the extra 2 Hz of low-end response, and slightly greater headroom for when I really want to crank it up. No doubt you can save some cash going with the 10" and the SPL-1000 II would probably fill your room with enough bass... but you'd be at 24-120 Hz +/- 3 dB instead of 22-120 Hz.
