I agree that most long throw woofers don't sound very good at all. Never judge a sub by the size of the surround or motor structure or throw of the driver. If it were that simple, we'd all be using car audio subwoofer drivers in our homes.
Some very long throw subwoofers just don't work with some satellite speakers, especially if they're closed box and say a -3dB at 75 Hz, there are some very capable speakers with such properties. I have a pair of Duntech PCL-15's,,you just can't match them with long throw sub's with very heavy diaphragms, because the woofers will just be too slow and lagging behind (I don't know this, it's just what I believe and what I think that I perceive....)
Well, this is just my opinion, but do you agree? and is that something to be considered for reviews? what's the actual upper frequency's that the subwoofer will actually handle without getting into real issues........
