Suggestions on new sub!

My room is dedicated to music and home theater. It is 13x13x8. I have acoustic panels throughout the room and soon after the sub purchase, GIK tritraps. Since it is my room, WAF is not a factor. THe systems is comprised of: Monitor Audio S6 fronts, S2 center (only one) and SFX rears. They are run by Rotel RMB-1075, RSP-1068, Marantz DV 7001 and a Samsung 42' plasma. I was looking at the SVS PC-Ultra, ACI Titan XL, HSU VTF 3 MK3, and thought about the Surnfire HRS-12. Any suggestions? Would like to keep the price as high as the PC-Ultra. Thanks!!

Given the choices you have listed, I think the real choice is between the SVS and the ACI. I have not heard anything of the ACI's but they do look very nice as do the listed details on specs----but we all know this mean nothing in terms of sound or quality. From what I can see though the SVS has better response and very likely better output as well...

These are all very good subs that you have listed here, but I would have to say that the PC-Ultra is going to be your best bet...and this sub will be an absolute beast in your room...

Well, I got it upstairs. This thing is HUGE I am in LOVE I would love to buy another one but I really don't know where I would put it. For those that own a subwoofer like this, I'm afraid of overdriving it or having it bottom out. How do you know when you are reaching the limits of the subwoofer? I can tell when I'm stressing the speakers but I find it hard to tell with the sub. With my room dimensions (13x13x8), carpeted floor, and a few acoustical panels, what kind of SPL should I be getting out of this sub? It is place in the front left corner. Thanks

I recommend contacting SVS with your questions, as they are good about responding to such issues. Generally speaking, it is usually safe, when playing something with a fairly constant level, to gradually turn up the volume until you hear distortion of some sort, and then turn it down again until you no longer hear the distortion, and you then have the maximum safe volume of a speaker.

Since I do not own the current Ultra, I cannot tell you what it will do from personal experience. But my pair of SVS CS-Ultras can play very loud and deep without problems in my room that is a bit larger than yours. Judging from the reviews, I would guess that you will have enough bass for sane listening levels.

One more thing I forgot to add: You only need a second one if the first isn't enough for you. If you start bottoming out, or if you have bass irregularities due to the room, then you may want to consider a second one. Otherwise, it would be a waste of money. I have two of the SVS CS-Ultras, because I bought them used and the person selling them was selling both together. One is not much less than two. The reason for that is that to get something just 3 dB louder, you need twice the movement of air (which is why a doubling of power to a speaker gets 3 dB louder, assuming the speaker can handle the power). So, unless one is trying to smooth out the bass in a particular room with having multiple subwoofers, usually getting two of a particular type is not going to help very much. Usually, when someone is thinking about buying a subwoofer, it is better to buy one really good subwoofer instead of two that cost the same. Of course, if one is very nearly enough, then two might be fine. And judging from the reviews of the new, improved Ultra, if two of those are not enough, you will probably need to spend a lot of money to be happy.

There is absolutely no need for me to have 2 of these things, specially in a room this size. If I were to someday get another one, it would be because I felt like spending money or got a bigger house. I love this sub and I'm extremely happy with it. I plan on taking some time this week to start tweaking it with the Avia disk and messing with the PEQ.

Before I buy another of these, I think I would get a few more acoustical panels and another main amp and change the speaker system. Then I would get another PB13-Ultra.

i have been running my KEF downfiring, internal powered sub for a while now and always loved it, the rich, clear bass that it produced is wonderful, a delight to hear during films, will always put my thumbs up to KEF, always recomend them.

I had a similar reaction to getting my SVS CS-Ultra subwoofers, though they did not drive me to drink.
