I have about 175$ to spend on some floor standing or bookshelf speakers. I know it's a tight budget but if anyone could suggest something that would be awesome.

I think the company is folding but I have seen a few pairs mentioned here before. Google tube audio design and they have a set of speakers that are in your range.

Based on what people say about the Athenas, they are very good for the money. It seems like audioadvisor's price is good. Also, you can find PSB B15s for about that price if you are willing to hunt for something used.

Personally I would get bookshelves at this budget unless you are an absolute bass-head and just can't take something without low end. You will get a better overall sound at any price point with bookshelves, but at some point, you need the low end :)

Seconded. Get some decent bookshelves at that price rather than craptastic floorstanders. The Athenas are priced right for what you get. But also look used.

Do you have a subwoofer? Or, are you needing something more full-range?

I will have a subwoofer and can a moderator please change the 175$ to 275-300$. I have changed my price range to 275-300$. Even though I will have a subwoofer I still want the floor standers to put out some bass. New suggestions anyone?

Those look nice for the money and I have heard good things about the line.

I used to have the JBL E100's (a slightly larger version of those Venue series). They were good speakers. They are a little dull in the midrange and in the highs (although a slightly bright amp takes care of the highs). The bass was great. I ended up selling them because they were too large for the house we bought.

The Athenas look a lot like the Energy C line (same parent company) which I have heard are really nice. I'd like to hear some reviews of the Athenas. It's a good price none the less.

Also, for 300, you can get the PSB B25s (in maple :( ) which are fantastic here. Also check these (Monitor Audio Bronze B2) out. I was impressed by those when I was auditioning a while back. Both of those go down into the ~42-45 Hz range and sound very full for a bookshelf. I've heard floorstanders that don't sound as full. Again, these are just my opinions....

I know you said you want floorstanders. I went exactly that route (in about your same price range) about 2 years ago, and I just sold my JBLs and bought new speakers last month...... :) YMMV however....

Those Athena L300s are a good bet, I would go with them of the ones shown.

What's with the Bizzybee speakers, didn't we cover this, about it being a scam? I am pretty sure it was in one of your threads Jamie.
