Now thats a job well done.

Great article. Maybe a tad difficult to follow for someone with a non-scientific background, but I loved it. I especially liked the eigenmode analysis. Figure 33a,b,c also amaze me, that dip will be suicidal for someone less informed. Thanks.

Mark is doing one more even deeper article which will include up to 4 subwoofer calibrations using sophisticated measuring devices, followed by a very general article listing all the potentially good placement options with associated pros and cons.

I just read “AV123 Rocket UFW-10 Subwoofer Review” by Patrick Hart. $1000.00 for 2 great subs is 2 good an opportunity to let up. But, this excellent article got me thinking on what is the effect of adding multiple subs to a single “sub pre-out”.

I am thinking of getting the Yammy HTR-5790 and 2 UFW's. The 5790 has a single sub pre-out. Is it possible to overload the amp if I split the signal to 2 subs and connect only the RCA "R" on the sub. What about 4 subs if I get two more in the future.

Also, the UFW-10 has the RCA L+R option that can be used with a Y-splitter. Does this increase the load on the amp when using 2 or 4 subs?

I have added a diagram for better explanation of the setup.

Will I kill the a/v receiver if I do something like this?
The last time I talked of 4 subs I was scoffed like I has lost my marbles. But if any of the people that rebuked me for even thinking of using 4 subs had read the H/K articles on sub placement and getting optimum bass through sub placement vs number of subs, they would have known where I came from. Hopfully the next article will make the issue lucid.

Very good article. I enjoyed it and the pics of the modal positions were great for those having a hard time picturing exactly what was happening.

One suggestion, next time, think about moving the sub in the vertical plane. Even getting it up a foot off the floor does the same thing in the 3rd dimension that getting them away from a wall does in that dimension.

When and where was this?
Floyd Toole has recommended multiple subs for some time now.

Some basic questions from a new member

I getting ready to install and I have a few basic questions

1) Can the sub woofer work behind the TV if the TV is on a raised platform (the entertainment nook is framed 18 inches above floor).

2) The nook is 60 inches wide, would you recommend bookshelf speakers for the front speakers left and right of the center (they then would then be on the same plane with the Center speaker.

3) The other choice I have for front speakers is a flush ceiling mount (ceiling height is 10 feet), the rears are already in the ceiling (the house came with them)

This is my first posting so I hope I am doing this right....
