Subwoofer out of sync

Hello everyone. Hopefully I can get a little help. New member.
I'm trying to dial in my set up a little better.
My A/V is a Sony Str DH 790
Polk S15e FS,
Polk S35e Center,
Polk height and rears.
Polk HTS 10 Sub.

I'm currently using Michael Jackson Thriller to adjust the bass. It sounds awesome. But the bass drum is ever so slightly slow. I can't find a setting to speed it up to sync. Is there one?

Try adding some distance to the subwoofer in the setup menu. Try one foot at a time. Or use the phase knob on the sub. Have someone rotate it slowly while you sit at the LP and listening for it to tighten up. If you have an spl meter, you can play a test tone at the crossover frequency and adjust the phase knob until you get the most output on the spl meter. That should help smooth the XO region and possibly tighten up too.

Are you sure you're not just hearing an anomaly in the recording? Either way I wouldn't dial my bass in with just one song.

Would distance or phase being off add enough delay for someone to perceive a timing difference between the bass drum and the rest of the band? Aren't we talking milliseconds or even less? I can see phase issues or muddiness but to be able to hear the drummer being out of time with the band seems like a stretch.

Well that’s a good point. Maybe my coffee got ahead of my brain lol. It’s good to ask specifically what he’s hearing. It’s possible there’s ringing in the room making it sound late. That track doesn’t go low so it’s hard to say. I’m gonna listen to it quick and see what I get.

Oh that's funny. I'm pulling it up right now too! Lol

*Edit: I don't think there's enough bass in this song to be able to even tell, lol.
**PPS: I've never heard this song on a good system before. It's so clean!

Exactly my thoughts! I actually went up and touched my drivers lmao!!!
It is very clean and tight. In my room I didn’t notice any delay. This was recorded before quantization ruined the recording of drums so imo, it’s a really well recorded drum track. Can’t remember who tracked it but iirc Jeff Porcoro tracked some of MJ’s other stuff. Todd sucherman I think did too. My poor brain cell…

Here's what I think is going on. I believe you cannot hear the full bass range at the volume you have adjusted it. In other words, when some of the bass range is not heard what you do hear may sound delayed or detached when the reality is the front end of the bass, or its decay is just perceived absent at the volume level set. The fix is to turn up the bass at low volume and turn it down at high volume and/or adjust low pass filter to a lower crossover point to get more bass from your mains. These adjustments will make frequency response seem more seamless.

I got it sorted. It was a similar problem to which you stated.
My mistake was to turn up the HTS sub to 75% volume and let auto cal try and adjust the levels. The A/V could not adjust the volume low enough. It was at min low volume on the A/V , yet still too loud at high volume. I used an SPL app and test tone to reset it on the back of the sub. Sounds perfect now.
