No doubt. I just thought it may be less audible if the ports didn't face him.
Mike, didn't I read that you're room is mostly concrete? If so, I'd think you've got pressurization issues that most of us don't have. I'd think duals would get you well above 114db peaks. That being said, I've felt the wind of an Ultra at high SPL, though I can't hear it from 13.5 ft. I'm sure nearfield I could. I get the sense it's not that big an issue for you...you're just picky :p.
yup, i highly doubt the wind noise can be heard even at 5 feet away (and we are talking about 114db output here). i had to list the negatives there so i had something to write :) and the fact that it gives me justification to need more than two.

I wish you could get hold of a Seaton Submersive and compare it to your PB13 Ultra, I am looking at both of them for my new sub

I've heard of the Submersive, but it seems difficult to get much info on. Do you by chance have a link to some info about this sub? I'd love to see it.

Great Thread..... Audioholics very own craigsub ... mike.Nice Work..

Wmax,
My next sub is definitely going to be the DIY with infinity drivers. Especially since my room is around 2300 cubic feet. But how low would it go ? 20 ...18 ... 16 hz?

i'm actually very torn ...

i want to do more subs of different brands ... but the wife says i should go for the ultras (since its a known quantity and not gamble on other companies)

i've had the "i told you so" shoved to my face quite a lot since the eD debacle.

but I guess after I finish my setup, i can look to the following:
HSU "10hz sub" - I figure they'll have that beta tested already in a year's time
Epik Conquest or one of the lower models with the nice plain drivers
JL Fathom 113 or 212
AV123 MFW-15 when they get them ex-stock (or BMF-1)
TCA's Sasquatch-18

Yes The AV123 MFW is top on my list since it was pointed out to me and the ultra is second only because of its almost 3 times as much and makes me wonder if its worth it to me anyway. Being as inexperienced as I am I the av123 would definitely be enough to put a big smile on my face and my wallet:D Also I think a couple of the wood finishes are available now at least according to there website.

Although on the AV123 forum I did read a thread about someone that got the MFW15 and was getting a humming noise and had to buy some kind of a line filter for there cable . That does make me a little nervous not knowing if that was just a isolated situation or not although I haven't heard or read of anyone else having that problem it does raise a concern .

We have had a lot of threads on this driver. Here is one of my posts from the latest thread, post number 5. There are four alignments for the Kappa perfect 12. You will see that the ported enclosure, with mid Q insert has an F3 of just under 18 Hz, that is quite low enough. Not only is it low, but it also has high spl. The sealed alignment has an F3 of 28 Hz with second order 12 db per octave roll off, but will tolerate 12 db per octave eq below 30 Hz. If you want to build, these are good projects.

Please download the three pdfs and you will get complete performance graphs.

Mike - Excellent write up. You definitely put the subs through a lot of torture, well done !!!

We have a Saquatch driver, cabinet and amp in stock, ready for a prototype build. It will be 220V switchable, so I see adding a couple to your tests in a few months. :)

Mike - There will be deals for pairs and Quads. Look for some serious performance from a pair in a large room. :)

I am expecting by Fall of 2008. We will have the prototype done pretty soon, and the head designer gets a bonus if he has it ready for production by Sept. 1. :)

Hey Mike nice write-up once again. Did you happen to notice that the sound of the PB10 was better than the PB12? I am referring more to the pitch, not output. You know, just the timbre if you will. I noticed it when I owned the PB10 and the PB12 respectively. Maybe it just had a tighter sound. It is really no big deal just wanted to know if you noticed it as well.

Cheers,

Phil

playing near max outputs, the PB12 sounded much better than the PB10. i had the wife and a family of friends listening at the time. we weren't talking while we were listening, just switching ... and most pretty much came out to say that the PB12 sounded the best.

i can conclude though that it's because the PB10 shouldn't be playing near max outputs/excursion because it starts to lose control, the PB12NSD sounds much better with HT too as compared to the 25-31

How big is your room again, Mike?

In my room (12x14 x 9) do you think I'd reap the benefits of the PB12 over the PB10 if I listen at moderate levels (ie, receiver set at -20).

Keep in mind I keep my sub pointed at the couch for max impact.

Thanks a lot Mike. This thread is really useful.
