Subwoofer Connection

I have a Yamaha HTR5830 receiver. A friend of mine gave me 5.1 home theater speakers. It looks like the speakers were setup for a DVD. the 5 satellites were supposed to go into the sub, then the sub to the DVD. I connected the satellites to my receiver, no problem. Sounds great. Subwoofer problem is this. On the sub, is a 3.5 stereo connection that gets plugged into the sub, other end gets plugged into an adapter with 2 RCA male
jacks on the the other end, but my receiver only has 1 sub input.

Your post and your question are not clearly written. Typically, the receiver's sub out is cabled to the sub, and the five surround speakers are each individually wired from the receiver with the speakers set to small and the x-over set to 80Hz in the setup menu of the receiver.

You can direct sound first to the sub from the receiver (not the dvd), and channel your speakers out of that, but that is only for one pair. How are your five channels going to receive their individual channel's signal without being directly connected to the receiver? (That's a rhetorical question, by the way). Hope that helps. Cheers.

There are 5 inputs on the sub, which the satellites are supposed to be plugged into, but I connected them to the receiver with my own speaker wire.

So the sub has only one input and it is a 3.5mm jack? Sounds like a computer speaker system. That 'sub' is designed to have all the satellites connected to it and the audio signal fed to it from a sound card.

You're pretty much out of luck for using it with a HT receiver.

It did come with an adapter. Female on one end for the 3.5 and 2 RCA males on the other end. Can't I get an adapter with 2 female RCA's on one end and 1 male RCA on the other and plug it into my sub on the receiver?

That cable would be for plugging the stereo line-level output of a source such as a DVD or CD player into the speaker system.

Unfortunately there's probably no way to get it to act like a normal subwoofer and use your receiver's Sub Out.

So I guess I'll have to go out and by a sub. Any suggestions? My receiver is a Yamaha HTR 5830. 550W total. 110W per channel.
