What subwoofer(s) would you recommend based on the following criteria?

- Down-firing
- Approximately $1500 (give or take)
- 4500 cu. ft. with opening to 1800 cu. ft. room

Considering SVS PB-12 Plus/2, (2) Outlaw LFM-1 EX, others? Any direct comparisons would be great.

eD sub is too ugly. Do you know anything about ACI subs?

If you're looking for down-firing and don't mind the look of a cylinder, I recommend the PC-Ultra from SVS. Those are $1500 once you include shipping. I have one operating in a room with about 3500 cu. ft. that is mostly open to another 5000+ cu. ft., and it does the job very nicely. I have no complaints at all.

$1500 ? hummmmm.... instead of 1 sub I will use 2 in both corner, less than $1200 for pair include shipping. Velodyne dls 5000R , I use 2 for my 1000 sq. Ft. to handle 2 pair of Bose 502, it's not a problem at all. I never went over half way of 2 sub at all but I can feel the foundation of my house shaking. think about it 1000 Watts each.

Watts alone have nothing to do with a subs performance.

I'd put that single SVS up against your 2. I think you'd still feel the foundation shaking.

yes, and unfortunately ... the velo amp is 1000w AT 4 ohms ... the DLS-R driver is 6 ohms ... so even then, its not really getting 1000w.

The PB13-Ultra is a great sub, but it is front firing and OP asked for down firiing. The PB12-plus is downfiring at $949
Understood. But for a sub in the $1500 range I personally would make a concession for a front firing subwoofer like the PB13-Ultra.

And why recommend the PB12-Plus when the OP could get the SVS PB-12 Plus/2 for $150 more and still stay under his budget? Plus the fact that the OP mentioned the Plus/2.

I was thinking of another poster who had little kids and a dog roaming about and only wanted the downfire. Yes, I should have said Plus/2. But I agree with you short of the JL Audio FATHOM f113 which is $3,400 nothing beats the PB13-Ultra.

Yes, go with an SVS PC-Ultra. It is down firing (though why that is wanted, I don't know), will be on budget, and should be a fantastic subwoofer (I have two of the older CS-Ultra subwoofers with the "little" 12" woofers, and I am extremely happy with them). Also, it should fit nicely in a corner, without taking up too much floor space:

It is also less expensive than the PB-Ultra, with basically the same performance. It takes up less floor space, and it weighs less, so it will be easier to move (and cheaper for shipping, too). The only downside is that it is taller. Frankly, I don't understand why more people don't go with the cylinder subwoofers instead of the box ones, given that you get more bass for your money that way.

Well, I want a down-firing sub because (1) they are safer from my toddlers and (2) I think they look better. No cylinders because of WAF. How well does the metal screen on the PB13-Ultra protect the driver? What about other subs with metal screens? MLogan Descent, Genelec, Piega?

If you think that down firing subs are kid proof your greatly mistaken. Kids put things into the ports, kids hide stuff between the base plate, and drivers. Nothing is safe from the little ones.

The JL makes great subs, I have an F112.... But If I had my choice, I would take a Ultra13 over it anyday. Same kind of response in SQ and power but doesn't roll off anywheres near as quick as the Sealed Fathoms.

My room with the F112 was too small for the Ultra, or I would have that instead.

The Plus/2's are great, I have 2 of those as well...

All the box subs mentioned are huge - I would think WAF would come into play more so with those big hulking boxes, over a cylinder sub you can neatly tuck into a corner, but maybe the jury is split on this one.

One advantage of giant subs is that they provide a box large enough to sleep in outside for the night should it be needed.;)
