correct me if i am wrong guys. Since the a/v receiver only sends out a signal in the sub out channel. this means that it does not matter the size(watts) subwoofer i hook up to my system. What is a good buy?
yamaha rx-v 1600
pr. jbl e-80
pr. jbl n28ll
pr. bose 301
home made sub needs upgrading. (no oomph)

Also can i hook up 2 subs to this system? HOW?
Thanks

What's a good buy?

That really depends on your budget.

Correct, subs choice (size) is independent of your speakers. What does matter when picking a sub is, the size of your listening room in cubic feet including other rooms open to it, and budget. You can hookup multiple subs using a "splitter(s)" from the sub out on your receiver.

Well, to answer this question, yes, it matters what size and power your sub is. Very low frequencies at enjoyable volume takes power and a sub that can reproduce that frequency at proper levels. One only has to look at some sub tests to see size and power matters. Room size is also important.

My take on the original question was that he was asking if you compare two 12" subs and one has a 400 watt amp and the other a 500 watt amp, does that power difference matter.

I think not because presumably the manufacturer has used an amplifier that is adequate to produce the SPL they claim in the specs if used in a room of the size for which they the sub is suitable. [With the caveat that not every sub is actually going to live up to the manufacturer's claims]

The first part of the question was, does it matter how many watts a given sub has, and the answer is yes - providing you have chosen a sub that is capable of meeting your desired output for your room size. The wattage isn't quite as important as the amount of output a given sub has. How large your room is will factor into how well a given sub will fill it.

The second question was can he hook up 2 subs, and the answer is yes to that also.

sorry guys for not responding and thanking u for ur advice. Was medically out for a while.
My room size is 14ft*10ft.
I actually have a homemade sub which plays "ok". I was actually thinking of adding a new sub to mine to increase the sound. i love deep bass that rumbles thru ur body while watching movies. Maybe u guys can recommend an add-on or a new sub.
I do not have a lot of money but will make the sacrifice to complete my system.(pray my wife does not lock me out the house)

Concerning the subwoofer amplifiers, headroom is important. I have a M&K MX-100 (temporarily out of order) that is rated at 200 watts or so, but has large amounts of headroom. Unfortunately the sub encountered an LFE that probably shouldn't have been on the audio track and the power supply was shorted, probably ran out of headroom but the woofer was traveling from peak to peak making all most no sound (audible to human hearing). I had it up way to loud and the whole system shut down, even my Carver amplifier.

Polk is a good example of a subwoofer manufacturer that doesn't have good amounts of headroom on must of their subs. Velodyne is usually better about that for another example, they have larger power supplies, more and more capacitance. That is my take.:)
