I have a duel voice coil alpine type s 12 4 ohms and I'm powering it with a alpine MeV-500 mono block and when I first got it my gains were off bass boat at 6 and lpf was at 120 or so and after 20 minutes my sub would smell like burning rubber. I ended up turning the log down because I could hear the vocal on one song so I lowered it to 80 and I thought that it stop it from heating so I turn the gains up half way to NOM and it was working good and it was a different smell then before but it was not strong at all like before but then after 20 minutes it instantly blew and there was white smoke that filled my car. Why would this happen the amp is 500w and the sun is 500w with a peak of of around 1200w I believe I can't remember off the top of my head but why would this happen? I returned it to futureshop and Im currently running the same one at 0 gains 0 bass boat and 0 bass on the stereo, why was it heating up when I only had the bass boost on? When I had only the bass boost on it had a really strong smell to the point I had to roll the windows down

Your amp must have DC offset due to an output stage problem and be a POS with no shut down or disconnect for DC off set fault conditions.

It means your amp is crap and sending a DC voltage to the voice coil of the burning driver. This is a common fault condition in output transistor failure. However properly designed amps detect this and shut down, or disconnect the speaker.

That amp is a garbage product and hazardous and should never be used again and reported to consumer product safety

I strongly advice you take your vehicle to a reputable car audio installer. It's clear you don't have the knowledge base to even begin to troubleshoot this issue. It's okay to admit ignorance on the subject.

FWIW this is a very reputable 5-star unit on crutchfield. I strongly suspect it's what your doing with the unit that has caused this issue, but take it to a reputable installer and get it checked out.
