Sub upgrade question

Hey guys,

I currently own an Energy E:XL S12 sub and was in the market for a second one to augment my new theater room but unfortunately they don't make them anymore... so needless to say locating a second beast has been hard. I love the piano finish on my current sub and the performance to my untrained ears has brought no complaints.

I found a site online that was apparently selling them brand new in the box for $549, but when contacted via email (when I tried to call their phoneline, it stated it was temporarily disconnected ) they said that page for that sub hadn't been updated for a while and they now stock the newer brother to that, the S12.3 and they also said they would honor the $549 price considering they were behind the times.

That being said, I am rather leary of making an online purchase from a retailer that can't manage to update their website every couple of years or keep a phoneline up and running... you would think a stable land line would be a critical part of running a business but what do I know

I have done a lot of research and have read a lot of good things regarding the S12.3, so I am considering purchasing 2 of them. I mostly will use it for home theater, but maybe listening to music 10 to 20% of the time as well.

I found a local dealer in my city that will sell me two of them at $750 (Canadian) each... is this a bad price? The starting price on their site was $999 each, so I knocked him down $250 CAD on each sub plus I won't have to pay shipping which I am sure saves at least $100 for the pair, and they won't potentially get damaged from shipping either.

Secondly, the E:XL S12 is the first (real) sub I have ever owned and it's a rear ported sub. The newer S12.3 is a multi-downward ported sub. What audible/performance differences can one expect between those two designs?

I liked the rear ported design because I found it could be positioned near a wall which would add some punch to it's sound if so desired. The downward ports will fire into a thick underlay/plush carpet. Will this turn my new subs punch into mush?

Thanks in advance for the expert opinions ;)

from what i have read. the carpet wont make a doward firing sub sound bad. they were made to be in that scenario. but if you want you can just buy a hard surface to place underneath the sub and see if you call tell a difference and decide what sounds better.

I actually have a E:XL 12. I believe this was a step up from the S12. It is a bit different as it's a sealed design as opposed to a ported design.

I haven't used it for a long time and would part with it for $500 + all shipping expenses (I don't have the original box, so I'd need to obtain packing). I originally paid $800 for it about 7 years ago. I haven't used it for the better part of 5 years. I upgraded to a velodyne and just put it in storage.

It's in very good physical condition, However the piano gloss top is quite scratched up. I can take pictures if your interested.

Hello Brulaha;

I am not quite sure if I am understanding you correctly, but the Energy E:XL S12 Subwoofer is not a step up from the Energy S12.3, please see this older brochure from the E:XL line and this page regarding the S12.3

Again, perhaps I am misunderstanding what you're saying, I just want to be sure we are talking about the same product. I own the sub pictured on the far left in the first page I linked.

Regarding your desire to sell your E:XL S12, I appreciate the offer but one of my favorite things about that sub is how nice the piano finish looks and I don't think I want one that doesn't offer that. Thanks again.

Cheers.

Sorry, I misstated the name. It is the Energy ES 12XL sub. This is different sub from both the S12.3 and the E:XL S12. It is more similar to the E:XL S12 than the S12.3. The main difference between the E:XL S12 and the ES 12XL is that the former is ported and the latter is not.

Anyhow, you don't want it, so it's no big deal.
