Sub tweak after auto

Hi fellas,

I have a new Yamaha RX-V2500 with Aperion speakers (5.1). I connected everything, ran the "auto-setup", changed the speaker set to "small", changed bass out to SWFR, kept crossover at the auto's rec of 60, and confirmed all speakers are in phase and working right. One quick note: my aperion s10 sub has not arrived yet (next week) and so, I put a temporary (less powerful) sub in it's place and did the auto-setup with it to at least get the ball rolling. However, I will obviously replace it with the aperion when it arrives. I have listened to CDs, DVDS, and 360 video games for roughly 2 hours to test it all and it still sounds quite good.

My 3 questions are as follows:

1. Once the new sub arrives should it make a nice difference, and should I do the entire auto-setup over again?

2. During the Auto-setup I followed the yamaha manual's directions and set the current temporary subwoofer's low frequency to max and the level to almost halfway. Now that it's all calibrated, do I leave the sub at those settings now, or change them now that the auto-setup is done. If so, to what?

3. Anybody else have this receiver and/or speakers to offer tips, tricks, and further guidance. What settings do y'all like (for music, movies, games, etc.)?

Thanx!

I would say yes, recalibrate. The new sub is bound to have different characteristics from the current one, even if only a little.

It's entirely up to you. YPAO has set up according to what 'it' thinks is right. If you find it's just a little too bassy for your liking etc, just turn the sub's volume down.

As for settings, If you've used the receivers crossover setting, then you're right to have set the sub's own to its maximum. Check YPAO's Distance setting for the sub since it quite commonly sets this far larger than it actually is. Can't think of anything else really since you've also noted that you've set your speakers to Small. If you've got the inclination, you could try a number of calibrations with the sub in a different room position for each. Certain locations for the sub'll sound better than others due to your room's acoustics.

As per your other thread, I too find that Adventure and Sci-fi are the best DSP modes to enhance a film. As for games, remember to set the decoder to PLII Game so that you decode the soundtrack from your games in a similar manner to films.

I agree. You are going to need to run the auto setup again after the new sub gets there. As far as setup tricks and tweaks, you are really going to have to play with it and figure out what you like. I would do it in a couple of stages. Start out with some 2ch music, and get the mains dialed in. Then move to something with some consistent front content, and dial the center in. Then get a movie with a bunch content that your familiar with and dial in the rest of the system. The 2500 is really a good unit, it is very versatile, and easy to use, you made a good choice. You also are probably going to spend a bunch of time with sub, and main speaker placement:). Have fun, you have some work ahead of you, but it will all be worth it in the end!
