I'm setting up an Onkyo TX-SR502 receiver and had a question about the speaker set up. It has a pair of bookshelfs for mains, surrounds and a center but no sub. I set the speaks to large but wasn't sure what to set the crossover to with no sub, I set it a 80 Hz? Thanks for the help!

Can you set it to "no" sub? That will assure that all frequencies go to your main speakers. When you do that, the xover becomes a moot point.

As it now stands, it's still a moot point since there is no sub for those frequencies to "crossover" to. If you have the sub as set to "yes" (or whatever and your speakers to small, you're losing all the lows.

If you set the speakers to large, then the crossover is not used. I don't know why the receiver still lets you specify one (I have the same receiver).

As markw said, you really should set the sub to No. The only reason to set it to Yes (when speakers are set to small) when you don't actually have a sub, is if you want to reduce the amount of bass, maybe out of respect for your neighbors. Any bass that is redirected to the non-existent sub is lost. But as said, no bass is being redirected when the speakers are set to large, regardless of whether sub is set to No or Yes.

Thats what I couldn't understand, I set the sub to no and it still allows me to set a crossover?

If there is no sub and your front speakers are set to "large" you still might have a crossover function. If your speakers are set to "large" then all the bass frequencies will be sent to those speakers. The reason for the crossover still being active even when there is no sub is because your center and surround sound speakers are probably set to "small". If that is the case, the crossover will cut the lower frequencies from the surround and center speakers and direct them to the front "large" speakers.
